“Let's set the record on this now. Ed Orgeron is a great motivator and recruiter. He deserves a lot of credit for LSU's success. But, when it come to on-field coaching, Dave Aranda and Joe Brady are the guys that are getting it done. #LSU” - John Hayes

T-Bob strongly disagrees. I personally don’t see how he is wrong.

Okay, so your team either gets slaughtered by a head coach or a couple assistant coaches.

Your pick!

Who is responsible for hiring Brady and extending Aranda?

Hard to answer. One of the biggest jobs as a HC is hiring coordinators that know what they're doing and let them do their job. 2017 and 2018 LSU/orgeron weren't anything special record wise, primarily because of one of the coordinator spots. He made the change and 2019 is rocking and rolling.

It's just kind of a weird question to me. I mean, obviously when it comes to "on the field coaching" the OC and DC are going to get a lot of credit, but orgeron hired them.

He's letting his coordinators do what they are paid to do.

Head Coach is just the CEO of the team.

Coach O is much more than a great motivator and recruiter, head coaches have to have a great feel for their team during practices and games. Orgeron is the total package.

You could argue that point for any head coach with assistants.

I agree. He has proven to also be a great game manager - very opposite of what you guys had with Les.

It’s a pretty ignorant take.

I wouldn't go that far

He's done well this year and Brady was a knockout hire, but he would never be able to coordinate a defense at the level of Aranda.

He tried to do too much coordinating on offense and defense at Ole Miss and learned from that mistake. I think a "total package" is a head coach that can carry the load on one side of the coordinating if they have/want to.

Which brings me to my next point - Orgeron's greatest asset is his humility to admit when he isn't great at something or we need to improve something. That dude will make a change overnight. That is very refreshing and makes you feel good that he'll always right the ship if it needs to be.

I think that most head coaches probably play a much more active role when it comes to gameplanning - for better ornfor worse

Go ahead & name all the coaches that are great recruiters, motivators, OC's, DC's & special team coordinators..... I'll wait. BTW he's 2-0 against Aubums as HC & fixing to be 3-0

Well, your HC is there to organize, recruit, hire great coaches and motivate players. On game day, the HC (if not teams OC/dc) is to make suggestions to coordinators, time outs, 4th downs. His statement about DA and JB is accurate, that’s their job! Same with any coach at any program. Riveting lol

But if that’s how we are going to call it, then Nick Saban doesn’t get credit for on field results. He wasn’t calling the plays, his assistants were. He only recruited and motivated the players.

Chill. I wasn’t trolling with this post. No reason to be on the defensive. I thought it was an interesting comment to discuss on the Rant

I think guys like Urban and Saban, who are the best recruiters on staff, world class coordinators, and incredible motivators are the real elite of the elite.

It doesn't matter who those guys have on staff, they'll always have good recruiting, execution, and one side of the ball playing at a top level. They are fail-proof in a sense.

O sits in a cage until they need to bring him out to do shirtless chest bumps with recruits, or set him up in front of boosters to say “go tigahs”. His headset is off during game days.

To his credit though he’s happy to collect his 3.5 M and stay out of the way

The best head coaches will surround themselves with great coordinators and let them do their jobs. It takes a certain kind of personality to take ego out of the situation and not have to be the smartest guy in the room. It seems to me from the outside this is what coach O is good at and it seems to be working.

Great CEOs do not bury themselves in detail. They hire competent people and those individuals perform their jobs.
