Basically Tillman wasn't happy with USC bc we "sympathized" with black ppl. So he pissed and moaned wanting to found his own school but the state refused to grant him land to do so. Then John C Calhoun died and left his plantation so that Tillman snatched it up and again lobbied to found Clemson on, most appropriately, the grounds of the plantation. (look up who Clemson was named after to begin with) It passed by one vote.
That's a very generalized summary. There's A LOT more ugliness to it.
