And that's not counting the assistant coaches on this staff they will have to buy out, like Sunseri. Vols can't get out of the way of their own stupidity.

I would, but I can't see it for the layers of fat overlapping it on Fat Phil's finger.

How many times do you plan on using this same comeback?

You don't recruit in the NFL. It's all about the coaching the team your GM puts together for you through the draft and free agency. X's & O's are ultra important in the NFL, because the disparity in talent is slim.

Gruden is a Film room junkie. He is a cave man. He lives in his cave all week studying film and can break down an offense and defense better than almost anyone.

But...... That is not what makes you good in college. You better be damn good at eating fried chicken and telling Bubba how great he's going to be and wowing his mama. I seriously don't see a cave man doing that very well. I can't see a cave man wanting to do that. It takes a special person with special talents to sell elite players and their mama's on why Bubba should play for them.

And then...... After you do sell them, you have to continue to kiss their arse, because everyone else is still coming after them hard and heavy, telling them how awesome they are and how unhappy their going to be if they do sign with you.

This guy had a great pro resume as well:

It's a very difficult dynamic to go from pro to college or vice versa. So much is different because at the NFL level you have a lot more equal talent and no built in advantages. You also have professional athletes that are older and have no other concerns except keeping their jobs. This last point is HUGE.

Gruden is a high energy guy but he is also a true X's and O's geek. That's great at the pro level but it rarely works in college. Why? If you try to implement a true NFL system with a playbook that resembles a phone book you are asking for trouble at the college level. The kids simply don't have the experience or the time to get to know it and understand it and once they do they are out of school. This was a real problem for Sherman. A&M was constantly plagued by miscommunication about what route or what play was being called because the offense and defense were both so complex (DeReuter ran the D but he came from the AFA where he was used to having military guys that were super disciplined with Stanford level intelligence).

Maybe Gruden is the solution for UT but it's no slam dunk. Sherman had actually been a college coach for quite a long time and at A&M specifically before his NFL career. Gruden was a Grad Asst at UT and then had 2 years at small schools before going NFL well over 20 years ago.

BTW, have you ever watched his QB camp? He fits the mold of what I described as a problem to a tee. He loves it when he has guys that have the same encyclopedic knowledge for the game as he does but he isn't nearly as comfortable with guys that don't. In college you don't need geniuses, you need talent and execution. A simpler offense and defense run with great athletes with great execution is what wins 9 times out of 10.

"I love my job and I'll be back at ESPN with the guys,” Gruden said. "I'm not going anywhere … I enjoy being with our ESPN team. I'm staying put.

On November 27, in response to a question as to whether he'd be contacted by Alabama and if he was interested:
quote:

"No, I haven't. [I] don't care to be. [I] don't want to be. I've got a job to do here. My focus is on our players, this team, us getting better, us playing good winning football here. I'm not interested in any other circumstances or situations anyplace else. This is the challenge I wanted. I had a good college job, so why would I have left that if I was going to be interested in another college job?"

Asked again on December 3:
quote:

"I'm not going to continue to respond to rumors and innuendo, which this obviously is. I'm committed to a group of guys here and a football team and a football staff, and we're working hard to get this season right. It really challenges your professionalism and integrity to even talk about it. People throw it to the wall, see what sticks."

On December 7:
quote:

"No, I'm interested in staying here. I'm flattered that they may have been interested in me, but it really never progressed because we never let it progress. It's ridiculous. I haven't even talked to anybody and all of a sudden somebody's coming here to interview me."

December 21:
quote:

"I'm not going to be the Alabama coach."
