UCLA has offered Rick Barnes $5 million a year, and Tennessee has also come to the table with a new deal, sources tell ESPN. Barnes is wrestling with the decision. He loves living in Tennessee, but the chance to restore UCLA to its past glory is enticing.
quote:
Barnes has been at Tennessee since the 2015-16 season and led the Vols to the Sweet 16 this season and a share of the SEC championship a year ago. Barnes signed a contract extension in September at Tennessee running through the 2023-24 season that paid him $3.25 million this season and was scheduled to increase by $100,000 each year of the deal until reaching $3.75 million in 2023-24. His current buyout at Tennessee is $5 million.

Just got off the phone with Rick. He told me he gone.

That $5m is roughly equivalent to $3m in Knoxville, which is less than he’s making.
He wants more money for his assistants here.

Tennessee is tossing around money to keep good coaches and wonders why the Haslams own their athletic department.

The ReVOLution led by the god damn Battle Captain overthrew the Haslams in November 2017

Financially that is a bad deal for Barnes.

Technically, that's a pay cut compared to current salary if you look at taxes and cost of living.
It's obviously not about money at this point.

5 mil a year in Cali is like 4 mil a year in Tex or Fla. Not sure of the tax sitch in Tenn.

I support Tennessee in keeping Barnes.
I want the SEC to be strong across the board.

There is no income tax in GOD’s country and it has been posted that $5m in LA is equivalent to $3-3.1m in Knoxville, but I am far too lazy to do the calculations muhself.
It all has to do with his $ for assistant coaches

Hearing Barnes is conflicted mostly because the early bird special scene is much better in Knoxville. S&S Cafeteria was specifically mentioned.

He wold need to live in Westwood or nearby Brentwood or Belair. Super expensive.

I think there is. I was thinking these were the only states without income tax.
Wyoming
Washington
Texas
South Dakota
Nevada
Florida
Alaska
And Tennessee has a pretty high sales tax rate as well. 2nd behind Louisiana.
Louisiana 9.98%
Tennessee 9.46%
Could be wrong as I think this is from 2018.
