How this has happened to UT is mind boggling to me. Growing up, UT was a super power.

I remember. Their gradual decline started when LSU beat them for the 2001 SEC Championship.
I remember all of their fans carrying roses into the game (they thought they were headed to the Rose Bowl to play for the national championship). Those roses ended up all over the floor of Georgia Dome.

Jonathan Zenon ended their program with a pick 6.
ETA: was there for the beginning of tDecline (2001) and the end of tDecline (2007)

I was at that game and remember when we stomped all over their roses. Man, they took that hard.

Ah, yes. The heady days of the Fulmer Cup & UThug.
They were fractured in the 2001 SECCG & flat broken in the 2007 game.
Fallen & just can’t get back up.

I was giving you credit for being in the SEC Champ game, but I guess I can take it back.

Now, they are the 2nd best team in Tennessee, and not far from being the 3rd best.

Georgia started getting better which ate into their recruiting of the state, as did LSU. Fulmer began to decline staring in 2001 and their fans thought they could do better but didn’t realize that Fulmer was the only one in that program who had anything remotely close to a clue. What ensued was 15+ years of some of the most inept AD management that has ever been observed at a major program for any sport

It actually started when Cut left for Oxford.

Those manning and T martin teams were the best they had.
Even before manning they were tough.

2007 was the last gasp but they were in a decline prior. RC Slocum was that way as well... he managed to squeeze out a Big 12 title in 98 before succumbing to reality but the guys peak was years prior. Fullmer seemed to linger on reputation and Dave Cutcliffe.
And then there spaz firing and hiring of an overrated young clown in Lane Kiffin.

A shirtless Kiffin and O pulled the iron lung plug out of the socket on their way out with their best recruits in tow.
