They pretty much had to do something like this after allowing the extra year of eligibility, right?

They already said seniors from this season wouldnt count against the 35 cap who they gave an extra year for.
What they didnt initially count for is recruiting classes were already signed, and hardly anyone is leaving for pro ball with 5 rounds so teams were still going to go over the 35 limit even not counting returning seniors from this season....it started a huge wave in transfer portal but a lot of these found no home because a lot of schools needed to dump players to make room for incoming players already signed.
It makes sense to just get rid of the roster limit for this year. It will be much tougher roster management next season.
Still waiting for the day they give more than 11.7 scholarships out in D1 baseball, it's been a joke there for too long.

Yes
You pretty much have one whole extra class to fit in to your roster
In order to fit the next recruiting class in, the hope is that you will lose your srs, and your jr and draft eligible soph will go as well assuming they go back to a more normal drafts. I don't think we will ever see a 40 round draft again, probably cut it back to 20/25

Expanding rosters, but not scholarship money, is a joke. Of course, with a shortened draft and paring down of minor league affiliates, the kids don't have as many options as they used to.

This is going to be an all time epic season in 2021. Really hoping Wilcox passes on the late first round this evening to come back as our Friday ace next year.

This is what needs to happen next and it needs to be permanent.
However, I am not versed in TitleIX. Would additional baseball scholarships mean we'd need additional scholarships for a women's sport?
The flip side to more schollies means it'll cost more money to fund a baseball team which could lead to programs being dropped.

Interesting that they announce this day of the MLB draft.

Was wanting to push the season back a month. Start mid March

I’d like to see this as well.

Smartest thing NCAA has done in years (took them long enough)

Due to Title IX this is what I imagine has to happen if NCAA allows say 20 scholarships in baseball moving forward:
1. School adds another women's sport where they give out an additional 8.3 scholarships to cover the 8.3 scholarship increase in baseball; very expensive option for the school
2. School takes 8.3 scholarships away from another men's sport (probably disband it) to reallocate to baseball, doesnt cost the school anything extra

It already goes into mid June. They push it another couple weeks and it'll hit July or you shorten the season.

Due to title IX, if you increase scholarships in any men'd sport you have to do an equal increase in a woman's sport. So if we move to say 19.7 scholarships in baseball, they have to add 8 more scholarships to a female sport.
Or take those scholarships away from another men's sport (aka disband it) and reallocate those to baseball.
This what would have to happen. Pretty sure all female athletes are on full scholarships already, so you'd have to do away with a mens sport or create a new one for women. Regardless, the 11.7 number is a set number for baseball. To increase that number, you'd have to get rid of a mens sport or something to that extent across the entire NCAA. It sucks, but as long as Title IX is around, we're likely stuck with the scholarship numbers in baseball.
(or doing away with the NCAA entirely, with college athletics becoming semi-professional)

problem is the 11.7 number isn't a number schools have come up with individually. It's a number set by the NCAA, just like 85 with football. An individual school couldn't just disband a mens sport and pick up extra scholarships for baseball. It would have to be a dramatic change across the NCAA

Yep, and if the season goes into July, you start messing around with guys who take summer courses in 2nd session to offset a lighter course load during the season in the spring semester.

I know about that, my point was if the NCAA allowed up to 20 scholarships for baseball, this is what the schools would have to do to offset that.
You basically have 2 options on keeping your men's vs. women's scholarships balanced, isn't that the whole idea behind Title IX (From a school perspective).

Welp....
MORE NCAA NEWS: The @SEC proposed increasing the scholarship total from 11.7 to 13.7 for the 2020-2021 academic year. That measure was not passed as a separate piece away from the other two proposals.

Sucks for the guys who have already transferred assuming they wouldn’t have a spot
