When the season ends, a new one begins with the NCAA tournament.
Yes a conference champion losing in the first weekend is a complete waste. A team would have to make the sweet sixteen just so to make it a less bitter ending. A team needs some sense of accomplishment.
A coach is judged more on the tournament because you don't have another chance when you lose. A top seeded team loses to a 15 or 14 seed in the first round and whatever you accomplished in the regular season goes down the toliet. Because you didn't get to prove how good you were during the regular season by sitting at home.

A lot of you don't understand the history of college basketball.
1) for years only one SEC team could go to the NCAA tourney
2) for years the NIT was nearly as prestigious as the NCAA
3) for years some SEC teams (Alabama was one) wouldn't go to post season tourneys because they were integrated.
The bottom line is that y'all don't understand what the term "all-time" actually means.

I'm not arguing Missouri deserves its ranking or whatever, but maybe they took into account that our conference titles and overall wins and losses took place in the Big 8.
I know I would rate some conference titles (and wins and losses) above others.
Mizzou definitely breaks fans hearts come postseason, though.

Plus, with the expanded bracket, it's a lot easier for teams to make the tourney.
That's one of the reasons Arkansas fans have been pissed since Nolan was fired. We should just about always be good enough to make the tourney. Even if we lose in the first weekend.

No Awbren? Again, I was told they're a basketball school because they had a good season the one time. That's disappointing. I thought they were a basketball juggernaut.

I think if that was the case then Mizzou would be ahead of Bama. Looks they're weighting weeks ranked pretty heavily. It's a meaningless list at the end of the day. Just seems like an odd way to rank a post season sport.
Eta: It's the minus .5 for losses that is bringing LSU down.

Places too much weight on wins and weeks ranked which are the least important metrics.

Mizzou played one hell of a game tonight. I've seen like 4-5 Mizzou games and they played with an energy tonight I hadn't seen from them. Hats off.

Thought I'd be okay with Arkansas ranked 22nd, considering the last 20 years. Then I looked at the list and confirmed that it's shite.

Correct. Only the SEC champion went.
Some SEC schools refused to play against black players. Kentucky played against teams with black players in the pre-conference regular season often scheduling northern schools.
UK's 1946 NIT championship was equal to if not more prestigious than the NCAA in that same time frame. it was a shock to the eastern elite to see a "bunch of hillbillies" come in and beat their exalted teams. After the point shaving scandals Rupp refused to play in the NIT and many coaches in the midwest and west joined him. Thus that tournament sank in importance.
Kentucky has won National Championships with five different coaches. Rupp, Hall, Pitino, Smith and the current one. The current one would do well to read up on Kentucky basketball history and understand we were great before him and will be after him.

So every 20 losses for the last almost 100 years negates a final four appearance, got it.

Alabama's '56-'57 (Rocket-eight) team was probably their best team (21-3 & 14-0 in conference). I was a kid and didn't miss a home game. My family drove to Montgomery, Al. to watch them play/beat Kentucky. That was the first time any team had scored over 100 points on them (101-77).
I post this because they couldn't participate in the NCAA tournament because of the state's integration policy. They finished ranked #5 nationally.I was wrong. this is why they didn't participate:
"However, the 21-3 regular season didn’t conclude with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Although Alabama had earned the SEC’s automatic bid, the NCAA had a rule against freshman participation. Because the Tide’s starting five had all played as freshmen, they were ineligible for the tournament."

According to this CBS poll, LSU has:
More SEC Titles (10) than Tennessee -the 3rd place SEC team - 9
Same #of NCAA Tourneys (22) as 3rd place Tennessee - 22
Four more Final 4s (4) than 3rd place Tennessee - 0
And 8 more Top 60 NBA picks (38) than 3rd place Tennessee
LSU also has 2 more NBA HOFers (3) than Tennessee.
Yes Tennessee has more wins and more weeks ranked, but IMO those 5 criteria above are more critical.
Also, 2nd place Arkansas's stats should not count before they were a member of the SEC.
Which means LSU should be the 2nd ranked SEC team all time, not Arkansas.
CBS had their 'opinion', this is mine.

Do people have to pay to read the opinions of CBS sportswriters?

It really speaks to how bad Florida was pre-Donovan that they can win 2 titles and still be behind a program that hasn't even been to a Final Four.
Posted on 3/4/21 at 10:44 am to skrayper
Ranking Tennessee ahead of Florida.... and rankings Alabama and Missouri ahead of LSU on any "All-Time" list is just silly. Completely discredits the entire list. Not worth going any further.
