The big reveal is here. Below are the 25 most successful programs in men's Division I college basketball since the advent of the NCAA Tournament in 1939. In this longest of offseasons, I was sparked to research the history of the sport, and in doing so began to assemble a list of the greatest schools. From there, I wanted to provide a ranking built much more on statistics and achievements than broad perception or subjective rankings.
CBS Sports' assembly of the 68 best programs in history (read the ranking of Nos. 68-51 and Nos. 50-26) was objectively driven by the data. Still, I did need to come up with categories and assign values to them. I relied upon wins and losses, NCAA Tournament success, conference dominance, NIT titles -- because it was a significant tournament for decades, and even still is a marked achievement in today's age -- and the cultivation of NBA talent. Those categories' points were added up and the master order was determined.
NCAA Tournament championships (20 points)
Final Four appearances without a national title (10 points)
Regular-season titles (5 points)
Elite Eights without making the Final Four (3 points)
NIT titles (3 points)
NCAA Tournament bids (2 points)
Wins (0.5 points)
Losses (-0.5 points)
Wins over ranked opponents (0.5 points)
Weeks ranked (0.1 point)
Top-10 NBA picks (5 points)
11-30 NBA picks (3 points)
31-60 NBA picks (1 point)

Only 4 of those have made a Final 4. SEC is not a Bball conference obviously except Kentucky and once Florida.

I know Florida is a hard to rank because so much of the success is recent, but there's something amiss with the methodology if a program with one E8 appearance is within one spot in either direction of a program with 9 E8's, 5 F4's, 3 title game appearances and 2 National Titles.

The SEC didn't really get representation outside of Kentucky until the 1980s. LSU reached the Final 4 twice that decade, Alabama was a regular in the Sweet 16, etc. Arkansas being added in the 1990s was a huge boost (one national title and one runner-up within the first 3 years of joining) and Florida had a sudden surge in the 2000s.
Pre-1980s, though, really hurts any SEC team's "all-time" standing - well, any SEC team not named Kentucky.

I'll be honest, I don't see how Alabama can be ranked above LSU on this one.

How the hell is Alabama ranked so high

It shouldn't be, and it shouldn't ranked right next to Florida, either.
College basketball is a postseason sport. Winning conference titles matters, but what really matters is advancing in the tournament. Alabama unfortunately has been a really solid regular season program and a pretty shitty tournament program.

Likely the worst ranking I’ve seen.

I don't disagree, but based on recent success it sort of implies that prior to it Florida was a really BAD basketball program. Alabama for a long time was "kinda good", just never got over the hump. Lost twice in the Sweet 16 to the eventual national champions if memory serves. Same for the E8 appearance.
So yeah, more as an interesting talking piece than a ranking I completely agree with.
*Should note though, Alabama does technically hold a winning record over all but 2 SEC basketball programs - Arkansas and Kentucky.

Definitely won't argue that one.

This just doesn't make any sense to me. Everything else is too similar for the Final Fours to not push LSU above a team with Mizzou's resume. Pretty much the same with Bama.

I honestly would trade a conference title and losing in the first round to siding into the tournament as a bubble team and winning at least one game.
The first team obviously had the better overall season but right or wrong, fair or unfair, teams/coaches are judged on how they look in the tournament.

Yeah, that's what doesn't make much sense. Like UF, LSU should be higher. The non-postseason numbers should have to be so vastly superior in comparison to make up for a lack of postseason success and that's just not the case in these examples.

They must have the list upside down, Ole Miss is near the bottom ??
