If IU places 8th and UL places 7th I think TAMU wins this

UNC (36 pts) and UCLA (32 pts) would need to win the CWS

State and LSU are drawing dead as winning will not even get them in the Top 10. Same with Oregon State and NC State.

The coaches poll doesn't necessarily rank based off of CWS performance.

Using the 2011 season as an example, A&M went 2 and Q in Omaha, as did Texas...both schools finished 5th and 6th respectively.

True, but TAMU has no more possibility of points so they have to hope IU and UL get knocked out first and then UNC and UCLA. TAMU needs the low point schools to dominate the CWS (LSU, MSU, OSU, and NCST)

Which is exactly the scenario I outlined.

Louisville and Indiana are currently ranked #12 and #13 in the coaches poll...which is the LOWEST of all the CWS teams.

Does it use final ranking and not tournament finish? Louisville and Indiana aren't even in the top 10 of the last coaches poll. Louisville might not finish ranked higher than Vandy who they just beat.

Final ranking. If you recall, we finished 5th in the 2011 final coaches poll even though we went 2 and Q.

Wch is good for A&M considering it is impossible for both Louisville and Indiana to be the first knocked out. Pretty sure I saw that they open against each other. One is gonna win a game right away.

Best case scenario for A&M:

Indiana beats Louisville
Mississippi State beats Oregon State
Oregon State eliminated Louisville
Mississippi State beats Indiana
Oregon State eliminates Indiana

LSU makes CWS final

5. Indiana 76 (IU has a 10 point lead)
7. Louisville 66

No, IU is 10 points ahead in the Capitol One so they need to lose first. Better scenario is this :

1st round
IU loses to UL (0-1) and (1-0)
MSU / OSU winner / loser (1-0) and (0-1)

2nd round (1st elimination round)
IU loses to MSU / OSU loser (0-2) IU eliminated and MSU / OSU loser (1-1)
UL loses to MSU / OSU winner (1-1) and (2-0)

3rd round (2nd elimination round)
UL loses to ?? (1-2) UL eliminated

In order -
IU is the biggest threat
UL is the 2nd biggest threat
UNC and UCLA are only threats if they make the CWS championship games.

Louisville has had an incredible year in the Big 3 sports but like someone mentioned the standings are based on many sports. Alabama made the NCAA tourney and won national titles in football, gymnastics, softball, and women's golf and finished runner up in men's golf last year and still didn't come close to winning the Capital One cup. Schools that don't have men's and women's lacrosse, water polo, hockey, equestrian, etc teams miss out on tons of points and are at a huge disadvantage in some of the different overall sport standings and Cup standings.

While Lacrosse favors the ACC and east coast Water Polo is pretty much just 1 state and 1 of the 5 major conferences. Skiing is up there too. I say if only 1 of the 5 power conferences play a sport it is out. Seems like you want the most sports where the most schools compete. Even tho the SEC does not have Soccer at least almost everybody else does but Water Polo, really?

the order in which they lose is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT, as is their "lead".

The placement of the teams in the Coaches Top Ten determines final points.

Here is the current top ten:

1. LSU
2. Vanderbilt
3. North Carolina
4. Cal State Fullerton
5. Oregon State
6. Virginia
7. Oregon
8. N.C. State
9. Florida State
10. UCLA

Mississippi State is 11, Louisville is 12, and Indiana is 13. The College World Series Participants will compose the top 8 in the final coaches poll. Vanderbilt will end up at #10 and CS Fullerton at #9.

The National Champion is #1, Runner up is #2. The other two teams in the final of each bracket are ranked #3 and #4.

Aside from that, the last four teams are usually ranked based off of final record.

Based off of records:

1. LSU - will finish no worse than 5th.
3. North Carolina - will finish no worse than 6th
5. Oregon State - will finish no worse than 7th.

The other five participants will finish NO WORSE than 8th.

As long as LSU, Mississippi State, and Oregon State are 3 of the final four teams, IT DOESN'T MATTER WHERE THE OTHERS FINISH.

If NC State and LSU are the final teams from their side of the bracket, it's even better because it GUARANTEES North Carolina a 5th place finish.

Let's recap: Unless Indiana is in the final of the bracket, they will finish 8th because of their final record. Therefore, we want Louisville to go 2 and Q.

If you have LSU/NC State and MSU/Oregon State in your final, with LSU/MSU in the CWS final, here are your top ten:

1. CWS Winner
2. CWS Loser
3. Oregon State
4. N.C. State
5. North Carolina
6. UCLA
7. Louisville
8. Indiana
9. CS Fullerton
10. Vanderbilt

While this sounds all well and good we know politics affect polls more than they should. IU will have the B1G voters and media on their side while UL as a Big East team will get less love. Under that case you want to make it harder for the B1G to get extra votes and move up where it can take full advantage of its 10 point advantage. Therefore knocking out IU first is the better plan followed by UL. IU is the school who needs the fewest CWS wins to overtake TAMU in the Capitol One Cup, so they need to lose first. Simple as that.

What does the media have to do with the COACHES POLL?

The ONLY poll that matters in the Capital One Cup is the coaches poll.

The USA TODAY Sports Board of Coaches is made up of 31 coaches at Division I institutions. All are members of the American Baseball Coaches Association. The board for the 2013 season: John Anderson, Minnesota; Ed Blankmeyer, St. John's; Rob Cooper, Wright State; Barry Davis, Rider; Greg DiCenzo, Holy Cross; Pete Dunn, Stetson; Nino Giarrantano, San Francisco; Gary Gilmore, Coastal Carolina; Danny Hall, Georgia Tech; Carlton Hardy, Savannah State; Rodney Hennon, Georgia Southern; Loren Hibbs, Charlotte; Charlie Hickey, Central Connecticut State; George Horton, Oregon; Steve Jaksa, Central Michigan; Omar Johnson, Jackson State; Rick Jones, Tulane; Rob McDonald, Murray State; Eric Madsen, Utah Valley; John Musachio, Oakland (Mich.); Bobby Pierce, Troy; David Pierce, Sam Houston State; Gary Powers, Nevada; Mark Scalf, UNC-Wilmington; Matt Senk, Stony Brook; Dave Serrano, Tennessee; Ed Servais, Creighton; Doug Smith, UC-Riverside; Steve Smith, Baylor; Rocky Ward, New Mexico State; Bob Whalen, Dartmouth.

I do not see a lot of SEC voters on this list, and to many of them the Hoosiers may be a feel good story coupled with B1G representation.
