“Whatever the season looks like, the committee will select the best four teams based on the protocol,” College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock said.

Per the playoff protocol, the committee is tasked to "select the best teams, rank the teams for inclusion in the playoff and selected other bowl games and then assign the teams to sites," using criteria such as championships won, strength of schedule, head-to-head competition and outcomes against common opponents.

"The fundamental mission of the committee has not changed," Hancock said. "Choose the best four teams based on the protocol."

"This is why the committee has 13 football experts. Their duty, their task, is to select the best four teams based on the play on the field, and the schedules the conferences establish."

While steps taken on Thursday by the Big Ten could have a profound impact on the thinking of other FBS leagues, the general look of this season remains uncertain.

Even the schedule change announcement from the Big Ten came under the caveat that the league is “able to participate in fall sports,” which remains unknown.

Any season with an asterisk exponentially increases the chances that UGA wins the whole thing, since there will be a cloud over the season.

I think w/o OOC games this means there is little chance of two SEC teams making it

Or Bama. You guys actually count the 2020 season as a championship? Can already hear it.

Why if the SEC goes to a 10 game all conference schedule I’d certainly put that schedule as the toughest in all of CFB regardless of winning team and runner up.

We here on tRant might do that, but this will be hotly debated by everyone else in the country when there are five conferences vying for four playoff spots, and there are no interconference games for comparison.

If UGA is legitimately changing their offense, they would be my pick to win it all this year anyway. They are almost a mirror of LSU under Les since 2011.

1. UGa isn’t winning.
2. Most teams play one decent OOC game and the rest is crap. The best of the P5 conferences will produce 4 deserving teams and it will be settled as usual. No one will remember the asterisk if there is one.
3. See item #1

Why an *? The best of the best will play for the Championship.

Georgia might get there(I doubt it!)but if they do , so be it! No * needed.

Whoever, wins the CFP'S Nat'l Championship Game. Will be crowned the 2020 Nat'l Collegiate Football Div I Champions. Period! ................!

In past years you would be 100% correct, but this season I don't think the SEC has the Elite QB Play to make that claim, this season QB play in the SEC is gonna take a step back from where it was in recent years, that's gonna make a difference in the Conference Sked being perceived as the toughest in CFB

So when Oregon goes undefeated in the Middle School league known as the PAC 12 and Ohio State runs the table again in the mediocre B1G and Clemson gets their annual pass to Charlotte unchallenged and OU breezes through the Big10 while the 8-1 or even 7-2 SEC Division champions battle it out in Atlanta, who do you think is getting screwed? Hint: it won’t be Ohio State or Oregon.
