It's official and only fair. Which makes this NCAA mandate particularly startling.

The NCAA Division I Council has approved a one-year waiver to the annual signing limit for football recruiting classes, allowing schools to replace up to seven scholarship players who transferred after the fall semester.

For the 2022 class, they will be allowed to sign up to 32, provided they have lost at least seven transfers.

The waiver is valid only for the 2022 class, though the NCAA will consider “a more permanent solution … in the coming months.” The overall football scholarship limit remains at 85 in the FBS and 63 for the FCS.

The more that the NCAA does to "even the playing field", the broader the disparity becomes.

That takes 32 five stars to Tuscaloosa and 32 to Athens.

The disparity gets bigger.

I think it is fair for all teams with massive losses through the magic portal. Some of these teams, like Michigan State and others apparently know what they are doing and have been replenishing their stock quickly.

But as far as the big boys go, you are correct. Programs like BAMA are getting the first look at a lot of top-tier talent.

Tennessee lost 35 guys from sep 2020 to the last signing class (17). Can we back count 8 plus sign 32 to fill out a roster?

The bylaw says you can count up to 7 losses through the portal. Total 32 on the initial counter.

A lot has been made of the mass of players you lost, and it was massive, but Tennessee also was making hay while the sun shined as well.

"Tennessee has added two former Power 5 starting quarterbacks, three transfers from other SEC programs, two contributors on the defensive line, and last season's leading tackler from a top-25 team. The Vols especially have bolstered their defense, the new staff adding six players on that side of the football. Tennessee also added five players with up at least three years of remaining eligibility."

Cheer up, the vols did a little raiding of their own.

This is misleading.

They didn't increase the 85 scholarship limit, only the amount of signees for this one class.

Alabama already has issues getting down to 85 players. They won't be adding significant numbers of transfers because of it.

They need to further refine it by position group.

You can get 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 OL, 1 DL, 1 LB and 1 DB.

You can get 1 additional WR, OL, DL. LB, or DB for every 3 you lose to the portal.

Definitely going to help LSU when O gets fired.

why wouldn't this apply forever? The transfer rule is here to stay, so it makes no sense to limit this to just the 2022 class even if they're "considering" a permanent solution. The permanent solution should be you can replace a player for every one that transfers out. You can't just let players transfer without penalty elsewhere and then not let those schools replace that scholarship with someone else. If they don't make this permanent, most teams are never going to be playing with full rosters of 85 scholarship players. That ultimately will screw over the student athletes looking for a scholarship too

College football has become such a shitty product. There are only two teams with any chance to win this season, and it is the two teams who are hoarding the most talent out of high school.

Somewhere in this process, it's as if the powers that make the decisions thought that having the same handful of teams in the playoffs every year was good for the sport. What they fail to realize realize is that when there is no parity in a sport, interest from fans of the 120+ other programs goes down. Every time they make a decision to "level the playing field," the byproduct of the decision is the exact opposite.

How long before teams can “franchise tag” certain players from transferring?

The transfer portal is a can of worms.. and it isn’t going away..

I understood , they could replace up to 7 transfers with transfers. They can’t sign 32 Freshmen.

So, does this mean Alabama can take players who didn't pan out and gently help "push" them to transfer somewhere else so they can sign the 32 this year?

I get that it's always good to have the best team, but at some point it becomes more fun to play against equal competition. I've played ball in leagues where my team was overwhelmingly better than other teams. Those games are boring.

Frankly, if you're smart enough to think that so is everybody else.
