Im old enough to remember Bart Starr, Max McGee of Green Bay and also YA Tittle of NY Giants who was from LSU YA threw a beautiful spiral and the Giants had a lot of talent, including Frank Gifford (of broadcasting fame), Del Shofner, Tucker Fredrickson and golden boy Paul Hornung from Notre Dame and a Heisman winner.

Dallas had Don Meredith (turn off the lights) and Bob Hayes who was the fastest man in the world when he arrived. Of course the incomparable Johnny Unitas, who was not even in college when signed by the Baltimore Colts (yes, Baltimore)...he threw a lot to Jim Mackey who was hard to bring down.

Some of the defensive stars in those days were Andy Robistelli, Big Daddy Lipscomb, Ray Nietzche. Very nice fellers who you would never want to be in a pile up with if you valued your arms and legs.

RIP Bart.

If the Super Bowl had existed for his entire career, not just starting in 1967, how many more titles could Bart Starr have won?

Yes, he was incomparable. He was drafted in the 9th round by Pittsburgh but released. Threw a pick 6 on his first pass. Yes, he threw to Mackey but his memorable battery mate was the great Raymond Berry. Unitas to Berry was almost a cliche. Unitas was the master of the two minute offense, of course heralded by the final drive of regulation in the "Greatest Game". It was the game that put the NFL on the map in the national mindset as baseball was America's Pastime.
Starr had the great fortune of playing on incredible teams coached my Lombardi.
RIP Mr. Starr.

Johnny U I agree about Raymond Berry, but my point was that Jim Mackey was one tough hombre, I watched him carry two defenders on his back and another defender draped around his legs and yet he still get that extra yardage. Mike Ditka of the Chicago Bears was cut from similar cloth.

Cant neglect the Los Angeles Rams and Roman Gabriel, who went to NC State. Dan Fouts, John Brodie and the list is endless, but for throwing bombs...none better than Steve Bartowski of Atlanta and who went to Cal. But a lot of these were on color TV, not like Unitas and YA Tittle (the Bald Eagle) who I watched in grainy black n white.

I remember Pat Fischer,5'9" and 170lb dback for the Cardinals and Redskins.

Front teeth knocked out and would hit with all his little body would give.

Brutal game back then, better to watch than now.

Sad to see Bart passing, too many heroes are leaving us these days.

And there's that "LSU class", mocking the deceased.
