I really do enjoy college baseball and REALLY got into Bama baseball my sophomore year at Alabama in 1996 when Alabama started to become very good in baseball. Having said that, baseball was a complete and total afterthought at Alabama before that. When I got to school Alabama hadn't been to the CWS in about 10 years. Basketball was a WAY WAY WAY bigger deal to Alabama fans than baseball when I was a kid in the 80s. Basketball was HUGE back then and is still a close 2nd to football among Alabama fans. Baseball is the only big 3 sport that is bandwagon at Alabama. If we have great teams like we did from the mid 90s thru the early 00s then we'll pack out our crappy 6,000 seat stadium.

Skip was quoted in this morning's Advocate as saying after he had been successful for a few yrs, he started getting calls from AD's around the country asking him how to build a baseball program. He said his stock answer was to hire a good coach who also knew how to sell a program to the fans, build a better facility, and then you'd attract better players & the wins would follow. When he took over LSU, at best there were 300-400 fans in the stands and The Box was an old, rundown stadium. His first yr players were quoted as saying they would have a day of practice in the Fall, then they would work on the stadium for 2 days, practice one day, more work on the field. Skip & Smoke & a few players actually painted the outfield walls in the beginnings. Read where bama's & the aubbies' total baseball revenues combined were less than each of the league's top teams individually.SEC baseball can & does make money when the administration gives the proper amount of support. Look at what Vandy has done with its program, probably one of the most revenue poor teams in the conference if you take away the league money each school gets.

There aren't many of those guys out there though.
I do think Bama needs to go in another direction though. Gaspard is not the answer. Just don't go after Alan Dunn. We like him.
Scott Stricklin should be the first call yall make, and back the Brinks truck up for him if you have to.

Alabama can build a winner again and be consistent. The updated facility will be ready by 2016.
Mitch Gaspard built some good faith with a super regional in 2010 and a regional in 2011. Last year was a disaster, but he's back in a regional this year. If he doesn't take a step forward in 2014 he won't be around to enjoy the new Sewell-Thomas Stadium. He's a great recruiter but development, assistant choices, and in-game decisions have been poor IMO.
