can someone explain the lottery thing and why it doesn't seem to hinder any other sport's recruiting? (do not pay attention to baseball in the slightest, sorry)

You only get a certain number of scholarships. It's around half the amount at players on the team. The scholarships are broken up, so most guys don't get a full ride. If your state has a lotto you can use the money to supplement the scholarships. Other schools can offer more scholarships than we can.

You only get 11.7 schollies or something like that for baseball. How in the world does the lottery help that?

Besides, the FL lottery did not provide additional funds for education. It only replaced funds that were earmarked for other uses.

my question though is why doesn't this affect any other sports? Alabama is elite in several sports (all with scholarship limits) without lottery money.

Some states, I know GA is one of them, get to give out academic scholarships that are funded with lottery revenue.

A lot of ignorant people like to say that Louisiana has the same thing, but it isn't true. People can qualify for academic scholarships in Louisiana, but the lottery has nothing to do with it. A guy named Patrick Taylor donated a frick ton of money to establish a fund to keep smart Louisiana kids going to school in louisiana.

It helps some for in-state recruits, but I don't think it has as big an impact as people make it out to.

I could be wrong but I think the La lottery funds our TOPS program now which gives aid to any La. HS student with like a 2.5 core GPA and a specific ACT score. So a lot of LSU baseball players can get the tuition portion knocked off then whatever fraction of a scholly they get goes to expenses.

It's not funded by the lottery.

I refuse to believe that Bama is too poor to fund scholarships for a handful of baseball players based on academic achievement.

It's not. The state kicks money in. It'd be better if it were funded by the lottery. But Louisiana is arse backwards.

TOPS is unsustainable as it's currently set up.

yeah I was just reading an article about it a week or so ago. Seems like we'd be better of if it were funded by the lottery.

Lottery doesn't work either. They just move money around somewhere else and use lottery money to replace what they moved.

At least that's what happened here. Yes, Lottery is used for education, but it wasn't added to the education budget, it replaced the education budget. Bait and switch as I understand it.

Are you trying to tell me that politicians misrepresented their intentions and found ways to take more money from the populace?

Sir, that's just a bridge too far for me. I don't think I can believe it.

HOnestly, I don't really care. Maybe we could cut the program and make way for an interesting sport.
