Bama fans: Which defense was more impressive to you - 1992 or 2016?

Sure, 2016 broke down against Watson but he is/was a million times more talented and dangerous than Gino Torretta.

I watched both and although I loved George Teague, I think that consecutive games with a defensive TD streak was incredibly impressive.

What say you?

Had Jalen Hurts and Steve Sarkisian not collectively left them to die by going three and out on nearly every drive against Clemson the 2016 squad would rightly be considered the greatest Alabama defense of all time.

The lack of a championship hurts their resume however.

2016.

Watching our defense take the field was more fun than watching the offense (and unlike 1992, the offense was pretty damn good).

The inability of the offense to get a couple of 1st downs in the 3rd qtr caused this.

It still wouldn't be the greatest Alabama defense.

2012 too.

2012 Alabama
#1 in total defense (250 YPG)
#1 in scoring defense (10.93 PPG)
Worse Performance: 29 points to JFF (Heisman winner)

2016 Alabama
#3 in total defense (276.3 YPG)
#2 in scoring defense (15.1 PPG)
Worse Performance: 43 points to Chad Kelly (crackhead)

I wanna say that I saw somewhere that if in 2016 Alabama’s offensive points didn’t count, they would still be bowl eligible based off of non offensive touchdowns.

1992 was more impressive.

Based on the fact of the type ball Stallings liked to play.

Extremely conservative offense, which in turn required the defense to be all the better.

Stallings adhered to: Win the turn over margin, establish the run (offensively), Stop the run (defensively)

Statistically that will win you 70% of your games.

I'll say 2016. If they'd been playing against 1992 offenses, they might not have given up a TD all year.

I'll go with '92...as bad as our fans complain about Hurts and our offense costing us the national championship in '16, they should take a look at Jay Barker's stats in '92...while Barker turned into a pretty good QB his junior and senior years, his numbers were well below pedestrian in '92 and much inferior to Hurts...the defense won many games in spite of the offense that year. They had 3 shutouts, and only two teams scored more than 13 points on 'em all season (Miss State & Florida both scored 21)...

In the Sugar Bowl against the prohibitive favorite Miami that year, Barker was something like 4-13 for 18 yards and 2 INTs...if you'd told me that before the game, I'd have thought we would lose by a landslide...primarily because of the defense, we won by 3 TDs...they confused Torretta all night and their 3 INTs led directly to 3 Bama TDs...

BS. Blake Sims outperformed Coker and set the single season passing yardage record in Bama history...BB8 couldn't win the starting job at Arizona State and he was gonna lead us to the championship?

We have won an unprecedented 5 natties in 9 years BECAUSE of Saban...he puts us in position to be in the hunt practically every year...let's see what you think 'bout Saban when he hangs 'em up and his successor takes over...

‘92... but boy, is it close. That 2016 team is eventually going to be looked at the same way as ‘02 Miami.

Oh my goodness. 1992 everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Most of you weren't around the see the 92 defense. It was the best there ever was. You only could not score, you couldn't get first downs.

I love Saban and he is much much better than Stallings but Saban has never had a 92 defense while at Alabama. College football may never that 92 defense again.

From SDS

[quote]In 1992, Alabama led the nation in scoring defense (9.08 ppg), total defense (194.2 yards per game), rushing defense (55.0) and passing defense (139.2).

Entering the showdown with Heath Shuler and the Top 10 Vols on the third Saturday in October 1992, what was considered to be a relatively untested Alabama defense had given up 36 points IN SIX GAMES. The Vols broke the bank and scored 10...but a late turnover sealed a 17-10 Bama win.

None of the games on their schedule really stand out, because the defense dominated them all. They shut out Auburn in the Iron Bowl to clinch 11-0, then got torched by Shane Matthews for 21 points...LOL... and 317 total yards in the SEC Championship. Bama still won 28-21.

It was the second time all season the Tide had allowed more than 20 points (Miss. State also got 21) and the first time they’d given up more than 300 yards. Insane.

99 plays. That's how many the defense had to play against a very good Clemson offense. Any defense would get tired by then. Clemson scored 14 points in the first 3 quarters and 21 in the last quarter.
