Auburn vs LSU - Historical Stats

I am a statistics junkie and while this is not as deep as one could go, it was interesting to do a little research on the historical matchup between the Tigers.
Games Played: 53 (first game in 1901)
Series Record: 22 (AU) - 30 (LSU) - 1 (Tie)
Other interesting tidbits:
- Auburn and LSU have never played a game outside the two states of Louisiana (24 games) or Alabama (29 games).
- LSU currently has the largest wins lead in series history at 8 games.
- 2005 is the only game in the entire series that has gone to overtime (one that Auburn fans do not want to remember). John Vaughn had the worst performance of his career, ending the game with a missed 39-yard field goal in OT.
- The biggest upset based strictly on rankings for either team was in 2002 when unranked AU upset #10 LSU in JHS and in 1988 when unranked LSU upset #4 Auburn. Other notable upsets include 1940 (LSU over #9 AU), 1995 (LSU over #5 AU), 2017 (LSU over #10 AU), and 2016 (AU over #18 LSU).
(Let me know if you want to see another statistic and I'll do my best to look it up or figure it out...largest margin of victory in the rain in Baton Rouge with a Heisman contender at QB for one of the teams?)
While history has very little to do with future outcomes when it comes to sports, it's always interesting to me to take a deep dive into how two programs have performed over such a long history.
No one can pick an AU upset tomorrow based on logic and reasoning, but stranger things have happened, in this series nonetheless. From an Auburn fans perspective, one can only hope for a competitive game tomorrow. A blowout loss would be a disappointment, a competitive game would be an encouragement, and an upset would cause this board to turn into a heaping pile of crow - festering for weeks to come.

That top line really says it all about this series. Razor thin margin right there. And relatively low scoring over its history.

I think it is fairly impressive for a team to go .500 in 14 games against a higher ranked opponent.

Why 29 games at Auburn and only 24 in BR?

Great post! Thank you.
I love the series with Auburn. So many strange games and occurrences throughout. Tough games; always.

Not sure the reason, but most of the disparity comes between 1901 and 1935 over 11 games.
1901 - Baton Rouge, LA
1902 - Baton Rouge, LA
1903 - Auburn, AL
1908 - Auburn, AL
1912 - Mobile, AL
1913 - Mobile, AL
1924 - Birmingham, AL
1926 - Montgomery, AL
1927 - Montgomery, AL
1934 - Baton Rouge, LA
1935 - Baton Rouge, LA
There were also two consecutive games played in Auburn later in 1989 (two-year break) and 1992.

Did Auburn regularly play games in Mobile, Birmingham, and/or Montgomery?
If those are the only games not in Auburn or BR, then it looks like 24 each at home and 5 at those other locations.

Yes - didn't have an on-campus stadium that sat more than 700 people or something IIRC.
JHS (formerly Auburn Stadium) was built in 1939 to fix that - originally seating 7,500 people.

That is correct.

Agreed, although I wouldn't say I love it. I swear this game is to blame for some gray hairs over the last 20 years.

I love it when our Tigers play yours. Always a good time and usually very good football.

$$$
Frequently back then, they would play the game at wherever they could make the most money - usually the larger stadium. Notice that once Tiger Stadium expanded to 45,000+ seats, games alternated between Baton Rouge and Birmingham - until Auburn-Cliff-Jordan-Hare Stadium held 60,000+, then Auburn began hosting LSU. It probably would've happened sooner if the two teams played more frequently, Auburn's stadium become large enough to host UGA for the 1960 season.

Another interesting tidbit:
- The last time Auburn and LSU met in a top-10 matchup in Baton Rouge was 1972 (AU #9 vs LSU #8). LSU ended up winning handily, 35 - 7.

Just curious but why is this an interesting tidbit being that they are historic conference opponents and both teams play in either bama or LA?

I guess that's a good point. For some reason, in my head, I would have thought they would have met once or twice on a neutral site, but since they are both in the SECW, it would make sense they never really have.
This "interesting tidbit" is probably true for most Auburn SECW opponents.

Most interesting state for me is LSU being 7-7 when playing a lesser ranked team.

Love this game, as SEC as it gets

That is their record playing a higher ranked Auburn team - which is impressive.

Good stuff!

LSU-Auburn History Since Cigars at Tiger Stadium
Here's a snippet:
quote:
2001 - War Eagles stomp on the eye to start the game after smoking cigars to end the game in 1999. This is where their downward spiral starts. We onside kick to start the game, recover it and score. Damon Duval tries to fight the band at halftime and loses. He comes out and tries an onside kick and doesn't recover it. Then he misses a short field goal, then he attempts a pass on a fake punt and throws an int. Tigers win 24-17 and go on to SEC Championship game.
