I’m not sure I’ve seen a love hate affair with a coach and fanbase like y’all with Gus. Is the fanbase back on the Gus Bus?

I think the love hate dynamic is because we all like the guy and want him to succeed, but some of the on the field product has been incredibly frustrating to watch.

I think this has been his absolute best season when it comes to offensive play design. He’s really adapted his offense and incorporated new concepts this year. It’s been very encouraging, but it’s just been 5 games, so we will see if it continues. We’ve seen Gus go through stretches like this before.

Gus's biggest problem is inconsistency. The fact he is sticking with a freshman QB this long tells me he is making some changes. Which is great, but I am still reluctant to get my hopes up. What keeps him off my shite list is the level of recruiting he has maintained while sharing the state with Alabama football.

The sense of urgency by the fan base for Gus to be good wouldn't be as bad if our in state rivals weren't coached by Nick Saban. That adds a lot of pressure to situation whether that is fair to Gus or not. Is what it is.

This is such a dumb question. We are fans of Auburn and would like to see the coach succeed. This season is off to a good start. The last 5 season have been a very mixed bag.

Not yet.

He lost to Tennessee.
He let Coach O off the mat (twice).
He has been bammer and georgia’s whipping boy more often than not.

He has beaten a good team to start the year in the past and then fizzled out in the end.

This year feels different. If he beats Florida this weekend - we are all good again. It would mean a different type of season is happening. If he finds a way to mess this game up against a Florida team without a good QB - we could be looking at a 4-5 loss season again.

That is unacceptable to a big 6 school.

No.

I obviously don’t speak for the rest of the fan base, though.

This is a big part of it.

He does things that amaze us - 2017 beats #1 uga and #1 bama in 3 week time span, but of course blew the LSU game earlier in the year - which arguably cost us a playoff spot. We always seem to start slow and then pick up steam as the year goes on, which is frustrating, to say the least.

In a sense, he set himself up for failure by going to the NC in his first year. Not that any fan would complain about that, but that expectation was set and that's pretty damn hard to live up to year over year, especially in this conference with the schedules we play.

We've seen what he can do when he's coaching at a high level and that's what keeps bringing us back, but there are more than enough times that everyone wonders what the hell he's thinking/doing to keep us skeptical if that's behind him or if it will rear it's ugly head again.

It seems like every year the question always comes up if he's far enough into his head coaching career to reach that level of consistency that's needed to compete for the SEC and more every year.

I've said this since he was hired - so long as he:

1) Recruits at a high level
2) Maintains team discipline
3) Represents AU well
4) Makes good hires
5) Always puts the best possible product on the field

He will have my support.

1-4 he has accomplished pretty consistently from the beginning. Its #5 that has been his downfall.

I get that we will almost always have a talent deficiency against the best teams in the country. All I want is for him to have the team playing at their highest level possible from week to week. Obviously there have been at least 2-3 times every season where we apparently haven't gotten that kind of effort, which has led to either losses against inferior teams (MSU, UT last year) or embarrassing blowouts against top competition (UGa, Bama last year).

He has seemed like he has more of a spark this season thus far. If we play up to our ability tomorrow, I will be happy with him win or lose.

This is setting up as a classic scenario as to why many fans have hated Malzahn.

We started the season and looked pretty scattered on offense. True Fr. QB's can help do that, but this isn't the first time we've started slow out the gate on offense.

Then we have two game, one a very tough road game, that we look as good as anyone in the country.

In years past, especially like 2016, when we had a similar type run in the middle of the season, only to get destroyed late in the season and looked like a completely different team with no offensive identity again.

What got Auburn fans frustrated is that level of being so completely hot and cold within the same season. If he has truly improved this year, hopefully that downturn won't happen. We may lose some games, especially with our schedule, but keep the team looking competent.

The 2016 LSU/AU game was a blessing for us and a curse for Auburn. One more second on the clock and Gus would've been gone and we'd have been stuck with Les.

God is good.

Never stopped.

I have always believed he is going through growth as a coach just like all do. Has it been frustrating? Hell yes, but The man can recruit, has shown he can win the conference. Look at TN, and others trying to find a successful coach. Hopefully he can get more consistent.

He has shown some signs of growth this season. I’m good.

Gus always competes hard in the IB, a win in JHS would not be out of the ordinary as he's won 2 out of 3 in vs Bama in JHS.

That win in Baton Rouge will be the first in 2 decades, and Gus will be a legend when he smokes those cigars at mid-field after that win.

Seriously I think most AU people had always given him the benefit of the doubt until we lost at home to a pathetic Tennessee team last year. That was when Gus really lost a lot of fans. It took something like not only being 5-0 and #7 in the country, but also a complete change in how he approaches the game to win back those fans. Gus had an existential crisis. But he is a different guy. He must have done some soul searching and realized what he's good at, what he's not, and why. He's made all the right moves to make that happen. We may very well drop a game or 2 or 3, because of such a tough schedule that we play, but I don't think the team will look unprepared or we will run out some Mickey Mouse plays anymore. Auburn people can deal with that.
