Never heard of him, but then it looks like he writes for the Opelika-Auburn Daily News, so that's probably why I've never heard of him.

There's probably been people since the inception of the US that would have held it was political (quite a few colonists sided with the UK, for example).
The main difference is just that there's Twitter, Facebook, etc. Then people link those various accounts back to message boards so that folks can complain.
