After signing him to an extension are you at all concerned about him developing a QB? His best QB play has come from QBs that transferred in.

serious question I have:

Who "develops quarterbacks" or do you just happen to recruit talented ones that make it in college?

I was worried about Rhett's ability. Chip did a great job bringing JS along this season. For his limitations physically White was brought along nicely and even Nick got better as a pure QB from 2013-2014. Evaluation? That is a different discussion.

He was a CB at UGA but he was a QB at Garden City Community College, so it's not like he took a CB and made him a QB.

Kliff Kingsbury does. Developing a QB is taking a person that has natural ability and teaching them how to play the position more technically sound.

This question has been asked 1000 times.

Probably a wiki page about it by now.

Fair enough. I live in Arkansas now and when everyone here was certain he would be the next coach that was one thing I wondered about.

You mean develop them like Saban has done with Hurts?

So far Gus' development of QBs has looked exactly like that. I'm wondering if you believe he will be able to develop a QB like Saban did with AJ.

How successful has Alabama been with developing QBs?

Blake Barnett
Cooper Bateman
David Cornwell

Also it seems Hurts regressed this year, why?

HINT: It is about TALENT. Jeremy Johnson is the only true bust and he just did not have it. Gus should have had more options, but he RECRUITED poorly at the QB position.

Yes, mostly. Evaluation of QB prospects is fairly difficult and Gus obviously hasn't been the best at picking future winners. That being said, we've had attrition which has hurt us, too.

I agree with this completely. I think there are a handful of staffs/people that really develop QBs, and everyone else is just recruiting 1-2 a year to hope you hit on a few in a 4 year span. Alabama is a prime example. They had Barnett, Bateman, and one or two other 4-5 star QBs, and Hurts came in and beat them out. This is with Kiffin as the OC and QB coach.

QBs are just hard to evaluate, and the improvement is as much in the intangible and non-physical areas, and some kids can do it and some kids cant.

as to the OP, Jeremy Johnson is really the only thing I can point to to make the counterpoint that Gus CANT develop QBs. Chris Todd was much better under Gus. Cam got better, but to be fair he was a freak. Trotter was never going to be good enough to be a SEC QB. Nick Marshall threw 20 INTs in college and didn't throw that many in 2 years in the SEC. Sean White was fine when sober and healthy.

All in all, I think the "development" thing is a farce. Some folks do it. Everyone else is hoping they land guys that can play.

I'm more worried about his playcalling than I am his QB development.
