national title contenders?

I don't mean to irritate any fan base, but I think Jimbo Fisher is a possibility. Riley, at OU, is capable. Kirby Smart will probably get over the hump and produce pretty consistent contenders.

I don't pay much attention anymore to college football other than the SEC. Who are some other coaches that might be close to elite status?

Kirby is already over the hump as far as I'm concerned. Georgia was good enough to win it all last year and they were obviously good enough to win it all in 2017.

In terms of who is consistently going to have their team in the conversation late in the year, I think you named all the proven ones.

Saban
Dabo
Meyer
Riley
Smart
Fisher

Maybe add Chris Petersen

Beyond that group are those who may be capable but haven’t done it yet or haven’t done it consistently:

Mullen
Herman
Franklin
Harbaugh
Shaw
Kelly
Malzahn
Cristobal

May I ask where does Meyer coach? Waiting!

Surely you jest. Meyer will coach again. USC is a good bet, and he would have them contending very quickly.

Anybody except Bama beat Kirby last year?

oh yeah. Speaking of which, I think Herman is a very good possibility of becoming in the elite coach category.

but though he might become an elite head coach, we could say that about a lot of assistant coaches. He may be one of them. You know there are some out there. Just identifying them is the trick.

Now that you mention Venables, I do wonder if Dabo will be able to continue at this rate when other teams start raiding his staff.

edit to note that I'm not one of the down voters at your post. Doesn't really matter but just saying.

Venables youngest son will be a senior at Daniel HS this year and recently committed to Clemson. Think we'll at least have him that long.

He also has a great salary, is recruiting his arse off, and gets tons of incentives for winning every year. And he's said multiple times that he doesn't want HC responsibilities

Agree there are likely other future college coaching stars waiting in the wings...OP original question stipulated “coaches” not “head coaches” so I started thinking more broadly.

Though it's a good bet that some team will eventually offer Venables more than he can turn down, I am actually talking more about the staff as a whole. Since Clemson has proven to be a consistent contender other teams will start hiring their assistant coaches. Course, that those assistants will get that chance also makes it easier to hire other good young assistant coaches.

If Peterson went to a better school he certainly could.

Smart brings in enough talent so he should be able to eventually but has to work out some kinks.

Mullen has to get more better at recruiting but can game plan with the best of them.

Fisher can recruit he may be a force once he has the train rolling in Aggie land.

Ed O has LSU about where Les had them. I think if Saban retired LSU would instantly become title contenders. Their issue has always been beating Saban in the West.

Riley and OU are right there on the brink...get some defense and they will be on that list

Herman as well at Texas may be inching closer to elite status. Had a great second year. See how he does year three.

But really...It's Dabo, Saban, Meyer, and the rest for now. Others have a lot to prove before they are in their realm.

Yup. O will give Hermie an asswhoopin, but Hermie will still be the fair-haired-boy. LOL

I'll add in chip Kelly. I think a few others could compete at the right programs like Petersen, Patterson, leach

A lot have already been asked to interview but have declined because they say the environment at Clemson can't be matched under Dabo. And the money and bonuses for winning.

I feel like Clemson has been a consistent contender since the playoffs have started. And even a few years before that, we've had a good bit of 10 win seasons in a row. And during that time, we lost an OC (Morris) and D line coach (Hobby) but have still maintained and even gotten better in certain areas.
