This article is about a year and a half old, but it makes for a good jumping off point for a discussion about where a school might look, in terms of hiring a top AD:

Sports Illustrated: Who's the Best Athletic Director in the Country?
quote:

I began a project to get a better handle on what makes a good athletic director and who the best ones are. I decided to conduct two anonymous surveys: one with 15 of my media peers who cover college sports, both on TV and in print. The second was with 10 ADs themselves.

THE MEDIA’S TOP ATHLETIC DIRECTORS

Joe Castiglione, Oklahoma (16)
Mark Hollis, Michigan State (15)
Greg Byrne, Alabama (10)
Jeff Long, Arkansas (8)
Jack Swarbrick, Notre Dame (7)
Chris Del Conte, TCU (7) (now at UTex)
Jim Phillips, Northwestern (6)
Kevin White, Duke (6)
Tom Jurich, Louisville (3)
Scott Stricklin, Florida (3)
Mack Rhoades, Baylor (2)
Gene Smith, Ohio State (2)
Whit Babcock, Virginia Tech (2)
John Currie, Tennessee (2)
Bernard Muir, Stanford (1)

THE ATHLETIC DIRECTORS’ TOP ATHLETIC DIRECTORS

Huh?
I loved Woodward.
Wish he was staying in CSTX.
Don’t be paranoid.

None of those people will ever consider A&M.

Ross Bjork wasn't included in the rankings because he's the only one considered "Super Badass Number 1 AD of All-Time"

LSU and A&M would be crazy to pass on him

I figured someone would attack Long.
Here’s what the media had to say on his behalf:
quote:

Jeff Long, Arkansas (8): “The blemish for Long is an obvious one: Arkansas hasn’t won really big in football or men’s basketball. My biggest appreciation for Long is that he took a stand and fired Bobby Petrino after he lied and embarrassed the university. Not every AD would do that given Petrino’s success at the time. It took some courage. Arkansas is never going to be a great destination point for many coaches, yet Long has hired some pretty solid ones in Bret Bielema and Mike Anderson. I also like that Long doesn’t take himself too seriously and interacts with fans on Twitter.”

The AD at Oklahoma is one of the best in the country if not the best

Fans act like that care about this when it isn't their program. Not saying I have any issues with Long getting rid of Petrino but Long would be a terrible fit with A&M imo.

How is Dan Radakovich not on either list?

Since y’all love LSU’s leftovers, why not Dan Radakovich? He was once the senior associate AD at LSU.

The good ol' boy network at aggy is toxic.

To wit, here is the status of their heroes who "engineered" the conference move, or led them in their first year:

Sumlin -- Fired

Manziel -- Disgraced drug addict

School President Bowen Loftin -- Fired by the good ol' aggy boys then emasculated at Missouri

System Chancellor John Sharp -- The rails to run him out on are being greased as we speak.

Long had little choice with Anderson and Petrino. Anderson is obvious, but Petrino was fired for legal reasons. He was also responsible for hiring Petrino, but only after Petrino inquired about the job (but we're not a destination, remember.) He deserves the most credit for Bielema and that hire speaks for itself.

Wow that OU AD sure gets a lot of love. The Northwestern AD has done a good job also.
