You'll need a subscription to The Athletic to read the full story but to summarize:

The article writer and his friend were young sports writers in the elevator of the New Orleans Marriott the week of the 1976 Sugar Bowl (Pitt beat Georgia to win the national title). The elevator door opens and in front of them is Jackie Sherrill (just hired as the new Pitt coach to succeed Johnny Majors who was leaving for Tennessee after the game) and a very drunk Bear Bryant who couldn't walk. Sherrill asks the two writers if they will help him get Bryant into the elevator and up to his room. The three of them carry him up and plop him on the bed.

Those were simpler times when coaches were allowed to have personal lives....... Imagine today a coach like Saban, Urban Meyer, or Dabo getting so hammered they couldn't walk and being carried through a crowded Marriott by Kirby Smart. The media would crucify them and they would be fired. The writer, Ed Bouchette, waited until today to write that story publicly out of respect to the coaches involved.

Here’s Bo Pelini in January 2008. He had just been hired as the Nebraska head coach. This was in New Orleans no less.

Sarkisian and Sumlin had nothing on the Bear's drinking ability. Something tells me Orgeron could hold his own.

Averaged 9.5 wins a year under him, averaging 5.6 since they fired him. Big Oof

I think Bear and Orgeron would actually get along splendidly.

Bear with his fedora could wear drunk and look good doing better than anyone. Sark and Sumlin don't deserve to be in the same sentence.

It was even dumber to have fired Frank Solich when they did.

My father attended multiple coaching clinics with Bear and said he would sit a fifth of johnnie walker red on table and would not leave until it was gone . Said he also chain smoked cigarettes . My dad thought he was a great guy .

After our title win in January 2008, I was at Pat O's piano bar and Bo Pelini and his brother were at the table next to us.

This was at like 2 AM. He bought the entire place drinks and stood on the table to sing Sweet Caroline.

It was glorious. Most people there didn't recognize him I don't think or care who he was if they did. He had no LSU gear on that I remember and was belligerently drunk
