I don't get the Archie hate. People here fault him for supporting his sons and advancing their careers? You wouldn't do the same for your sons?

Clean up your Dad' brains as a sophomore in college to keep your Ma and sister from having to see the gore of his suicide and man up a month later to attend classes, make the grades and excell in a tough football conference and get back with me about character and the like.

I never mentioned his personal life or character. I said he was a shitty QB. Which is true

And I disagreed. See quote below.
quote:

He was a remarkable athlete and a prototype of the elusive, speedy, hard running passer that every team in the SEC would give a left testicle to have running their offense. Particularly LSU.

There was a general tone of Archie hate in the thread that went beyond his athletic skills. I only responded to your issues with his quarterback skills.

Addressing "the Archie hate" was a general response to the many personal criticisms that went beyond Manning's on field performance and touched on his character. It was not specifically directed to you, but, looking back, I see how it looks like it was.

My apologies. Totally my bad for not being clearer.

Dumb post and I'm a MSU fan. Archie single handled made an offense at Ole Miss. While with the N.O.Saints he had ZERO help.

In todays world he'd be known as Johnny Football.

I love Msu and always will, but to rip on Archie as overhyped is just stupid. He never had a team with support around him etc. Get your head out your arse and acknowledge he was great and leave the rivalry behind.

You obviously never saw Archie manning play. He was a great player. Any games Ole Miss won was probably a direct result of him. He really was a special player.

Mullen, the person who started this thread is a Bama fan. I noted in my post that Archie was universally liked by State fans when he was at Ole Miss (we still disliked Ole Miss but were Archie fans). He transcended the rivalry.

I am a Miss St fan except when they play LsU. But you are wrong here. Archie was surrounded with mediocre talent. I remember epic games against my tigers and the game against Bama. I think the qb for bama was Scott Hunter. It was truly an epic game. Archie was very talented but never had the support around him in college and pro.

offered my buddy $1000 to go knock those off of Archies head at the 2001 Egg Bowl. Not real proud of that and all I have to offer to this thread

My buddy didn't do it

I wondered why this got 25 downvotes

For all the old timers on the board saying "that you young punks don't know what you're talking about", You are right. I never saw Archie play live and I guess there is something to be said about that.

I also realize that it was a different game back then than it is now, and no one expects him to put up Tebow, Manziel, etc. type numbers.

However, a number that stands out is 31 TDs and 40 Ints. The guy threw the ball to the other team more than he threw it to his own in the endzone. He also never had a season where he threw more Touchdowns than INTs. I don't care what era he played in, "All time greats" don't do that.

Context. Passing stats in the early 70s in college FB were mostly terrible.

Teams were still running the Veer and shite.

It was a different game back then. You will find noted sports nerds like Bill Simmons just throwing a tizzy over Terry Bradshaw being in the NFL hall of fame with what look like lousy career numbers... but that was when you were practically allowed to molest the WR and passing concepts were mostly limited to throw this ball as far downfield as you can. Bradshaw playing in the modern era of football would probably have Brett Favre like numbers.

Under the circumstances Archie Manning had, for the era, very respectable stats at Ole Miss. Particularly since he did not have a lot of help around him. The man threw for 436 yards in a 1969 college game against Alabama. That would be like putting up 700 yards today.

You ran the ball and played a lot more cautious back then, for good reason considering how iffy the passing game was. You'd spend most of your time running a variant of the veer or the wishbone... and why not? Teams didn't really figure out how to stop the bone until the 1980's when Jimmy Johnson used a combination of speed, penetration, and gap control to finally drag it down.

Bear Bryant had two NFL hall of fame QBs at Bama before he switched to the wishbone and when you look at Joe Namath and Kenny Stabler's stats... they are about what Manning pulled off (though they didn't throw nearly as much as he did) and they had a lot more help around them.

People often ask what could Archie Manning do in the modern era of football? A better question is how would so many great QBs of today do in the 60's and 70's when the rules of the game weren't in favor of the passing attack and they were going to get roughed up every game?
