Each P5 conference partners with a G5 conference.

At the end of the year, the two worst in the P5 get relegated down and the two best in the G5 get moved up. (Or 3)

This allows teams like UCF to have a chance to prove they belong with the big boys and gives them a realistic argument for the playoff.

Example: ACC partners with American. UCF is moved up for winning the American last year, and would probably do well in ACC this year. Also Temple would move up for having second best conference record (or Cincy if you go by overall record).

Whereas Louisville and UNC would have been relegated to the AAC.

Thoughts?

Of course, this means that Arky and Tenn would be playing in the Sunbelt next year, and in Tenn's case, for a while, but...

It would never happen but I love relegation/promotion because I'm a big soccer fan.

Lovely bait, I'll pass though.

Same.

But with the NCAA now in danger of being rendered useless with pay to play, these could be the Super Conferences.

SEC and Sunbelt = Tier 1 and Tier 2. Etc.

Tier 1 schools get higher revenue split, while Tier 2 get a safety umbrella.

If La Monroe could generate the same TV money as Ole Miss this would be a great idea.

It's a fantastic idea. Because the blue bloods will never be relegated (at least not for more than a season) but teams like the landmass or the volunteer state schools would be constantly worried.

ETA: In this sense, teams like LSU, Georgia are sort of royalty.

So if Ole Miss wants to keep that share and not get a smaller share, they better improve. Make good hires, etc.

And it would make November really fun across the board, not just for the guys at the top.

Ole Miss vs State would be even more intense if State had a chance to relegate Ole Miss.

College football doesn’t exist for fans to have fun. It exists for colleges to have free or cheap brand exposure. Anything that upsets that apple cart is rejected.

Most look at what is and ask "Why?" I'm looking at what could be and asking "Why not?"

It’s really not that complicated. All of the people with money, leverage and an actual product hate your plan.

It would work great if there weren't other sports involved

Make it only apply to football. It's the only sport designed to prevent smaller schools and programs from winning it all.

Like ND and the ACC type of deal.

Split FBS football into 2 divisions
Division I = P5 + other to get to 64
Division II = G5 + whatever is left

Each has their own 4 team playoff.

Everybody wins

Split FBS into 2 divisions:

FBS-1 = P5 conferences; Notre Dame and BYU need to join a conference to be included.

FBS-2 = G5 conferences and the other FBS independents. FBS-2 gets its own natty playoff.

No reguar season or playoff games between teams in different divisions. FBS-1 only plays vs FBS-1, FBS-2 only plays vs FBS-2, FCS only plays vs FCS. OK for non-playoff bowls to contract or invite cross-division matchups.

If an FBS-2 team wants to move up to FBS-1 it's is up to them to find an FBS-1 conference that wants to take them in.

ETA: Cheese Grits beat me to it.
