Frank Howard started it. He was close friend and ex-team mate of Paul Bryant and was close to being on the same level. Close I say. In fact when Bryant came home from WWII he tried to get Frank to hire him @ Clemson. Howard, not being a fool told him "You're my best friend but no way. You would drink my blood and take my job within a year and I'd be begging you for a job."

Then they hired Danny Ford who played on Bryant's 60's teams @ UA. And no the apples didn't fall too far from the tree. He was a bad arse coach. Then they hired Dabo who played and learned the trade from Coach Stallings, a hard core PB diciple. So short answer is likely CU success is tied to their commitment and goes back to Bryant/Howard who were as close as 2 peas in a pod. One other thing: No Dabo is not going back to Alabama. Why would he. He loved UA, maybe still does but his home now is in South Carolina and he has built and carried on something there. Actually to new heights. And no it has nothing to do with his being "too smart"...I know Dabo and just like Danny, smart ain't the first impression he'd leave you with.

Oh and I forgot about Charlie Pell, played for Bryant and went 18-4-1 at Clemson.

Frank Howard was 13-15-2 against us. If South Carolina stayed in the ACC instead of bolting in 1971, the record isn't as lopsided.

Howard was actually a very intelligent man. He just had some funny sayings! Said he left Barlow Bend, Alabama heading to Tuscaloosa walking barefoot on a barbed wire fence with a wildcat under both arms. When asked where Barlow Bend was @ the Rose Bowl where Bama put Southern football on the map he replied "three wagon greasin's from Mobile"...President of the student body @ Alabama and started off there on an academic scholarship. A one of a kind and there may never be another like him.

Well I like Muschamp too and was in the tiny minority thinking they made a brilliant move hiring him. He too has a Bama/Bryant little connection. Brother Bill Oliver, one of the best DC's who ever breathed and who played and coached under Bryant got hot under the collar @ Stallings @ UA. He felt he should have been the head coach and chaffed under Stallings. So the worst thing he could do to spite was quit and go to work @ Auburn which is what he did. Muschamp was a go getting son of a buck walkon @ UGA and Oliver hired him as an analyst/gofer working under he @ Auburn and made a football coach out of him.

He has hired some snakes, a combo of tough, fundamental football coaches and yes snake oil salesmen and will do well @ USC. Fact he already is. Meyer went apes--t @ UF and left a world class mess of it! And left Will holding the snipe sack. Now how's that for an honest answer to a pissy little "dickriding" comment. I can tell you have little practice dealing with men.

What will the Ad at Clemson do when Bama offers when Saban retires? But in the end I don’t think he moves. You don’t build a 17,000 sq foot house with your eye on making a move. And in a few more years he will be the goat of Clemson.

We know all about leaving a program in world of trouble from Spurrier doing it to us. Muschamp was left with building the program from the ground up.

What I find interesting is that as much as the taters bash Muschamp, dabo's record at the same point in his career at clem is actually one game short of what Muschamp has accomplished. They also forget that when they were looking for a coach, they had Muschamp high on their list of who they wanted to hire. Irony at it's finest. Not to mention Dabo is only .500 against us. Not exactly the domination they claim to have over us under Dabo.

ETA: As far as having very little experience with men, my ex-husband was a tater so that is a very valid point.

Frank Howard was one of the most entertaining coaches you will find, and a natural story teller. In this short video he talks about not hiring Coach Bryant and a recruiting visit.

Covers this in a little over one and a half minutes.

Well if it means anything Muschamp was on Saban's staff @ LSU which included Kirby Smart. And he choose Will over Smart as defensive cord. And Mushamp was the hottest assistant in America @ one point.

The whole "Muschamp will never have a successful offense" the Gators have nonstop made is about to be blown out of the water, as well. I cannot wait.

I completely agree. Last year looked a little sketchy midseason, but we lost deebo, and during the A&M game we were down 4 of our 5 starting Olineman at one point. 3 of our starters were gone for several games (LA Tech in particular)

I think our Oline becomes a strength under Wolf and Bentley can sling it around at will. Every receiver we have is great.

Just would love to get a run game going.

McClendon using Deebo, Edwards, Shi and Or'Tre at the same time is what is intriguing to me. Who is the opposing defense going to key in on? Defending those 4 at the same time is going to be very interesting to watch.

with what? his all-time losing record vs Carolina?

hen they hired Danny Ford
'ol bo - you forgot the biggest Bama of them all - Cheatin Charley Pell. you know - the coach who set a record for number of rules violations at Pickens Tech and then immediately after at Florida. Danny Boy got lucky and beat Georgia in '81 but couldn't quite get past Bobby Ross at Maryland 3 years in a row in the ACC. then the NCAA set up shop again on Danny's campus in '86. he was forced out to avoid a second probation in 8 years, in 1989.

in his own words...

"“It was a difficult situation. I went to Alabama when I was 18, I left when I was 31,” he said. “So I spent a long time down there and had such a great experience, the good and the bad. Now I can look back and say it was a great learning experience for me. Sometimes you learn more from what not to do than you do the good, and that’s kind of what that whole experience for me.

It’s easy to gloss over now with Alabama once again on top of the sport, but the sanctions that made Swinney unhireable where very serious at the time.” I didn’t leave the profession, I couldn’t get a job,” Swinney remembered, saying he went after the Notre Dame receivers job Urban Meyer vacated after taking the Bowling Green job, but Bob Davie wouldn’t hire him. “All of a sudden I’m a young, 25-, 26-, 27-, 28-, 29-, 30-year-old coach and I had an opportunity to leave Alabama after the ’99 season and I stay, and nine months later we’re all fired.”

“They were absolutely staring down the barrel of a gun,” the chairman of the NCAA’s infractions committee said at the time. With nowhere else in his chosen profession to turn, he jumped into real estate development.

--------------------------------------

finally, the answer you're looking for is not a coach - but 3 men. Robert Cook Edwards, Bill McClellan & Dreher High School's own B.C. Inabinet. those are the 3 main reasons separation occurred between Pickens and Carolina from 1976-89.

the collateral damage was done in Columbia with the power struggle between Frank McGuire, Jim Carlen, as well as the narcissistic James Holderman - circa 1977. USC didn't get our Athletics Dept 'house' in order again until 1993 when Mike McGee left U of Southern Cal for South Carolina.

Pickens benefited from roughly 17 years being unified in their department, while USC dealt with internal instability and power brokering among BOT/boosters/politicians.

your point about Bama coaches is complete bullshite.

again - for clarity - the 3 men you are looking for to answer Koreandawg's question are Robert C Edwards (CU President/Alum/Letterman), Bill McClellan (AD/CU Alum) and BC Inabinet (CU Alum/Letterman/Defender Industries) - none of these 3 people have any ties to Alabama. now go sit your rawl tahd arse down.

This, and the death of Coach Joe Morrison in 1989 was a big setback. It's a big blow to have a coach die while still active. He was replaced by "legends" Sparky Woods, then Brad Scott.
