Yeah GT and UGA are referenced in Bama's fight song. The Yellow Jackets have 5 SEC titles, more than half of the current members

Bobby Dodd was obviously a great coach, but his decision to have Tech go independent has to go down in NCAA athletics history as one of the more colossal mistakes.

Tulane, GaTech, Clemson, and FSU need to be in the SEC with the next expansion

They had their chance. One tucked tail and ran and the other decided to take an easier path to championships.

Reading the OP makes me irate that SLU jettisoned the football program in the late 40's.

Bowden was 8-5-1 against Spurrier while the latter was mostly dominating the SEC; would it have been that much tougher? Granted two of those 5 Spurrier wins probably prevented FSU from winning MNCs

If you think the ACC is down now it was even weaker back when they joined. He's gone on record saying they chose the ACC for the easier path.

Also Miami having the lead over UF when the Gators were the only one of the "big three" that was decent before 1980
Huh? When, prior to 1980, was Florida considered good?

Agreed both Ga Tech and FSU had their chance with the SEC. Ga Tech left and Bobby Bowden didn’t want in so he personally could win national titles. His chance of doing so lessened in the SEC. Coward

Biggest surprises for me: how little Louisville and UK have played and how "close" Georgia-GT is. Also Miami having the lead over UF when the Gators were the only one of the "big three" that was decent before 1980

Georgia Tech was a powerhouse until the late 60's. Biggest mistake they ever made was leaving the SEC. They were better than UGA until they left.

None of the Florida teams were any good until the 80's.

They had some good teams. Especially when Spurrier was the qb.

I forgot FSU had a little run with Biletnikoff in the 1960s, I believe LSU played them in a bowl game. Overall, UF was the best of the Big 3 before 1980 though, looks like they nearly won the SEC a couple of times LINK

That's just smart, I'd much rather be in the Big 12 for easier chance at the playoff. Bowden owned the SEC's best team up to 2001

Even if we have been your Washington Generals, we doubled everyone’s revenue.

You’re welcome.

I'm not sure I'd say owned but he did get the best of him.

Haha! Nobody really cares about 12 measly games this century. What’s most impt is since 1975!

Especially when you only won 3 of them.

That's overwhelmingly due to the addition of TX markets, not of A&M. Yalls revenues have also shot up since joining the SEC

Yep, and the SEC outside of Tennessee and Florida was inconsistent back then. Florida had won 25 straight SEC games until LSU beat them in 1997. I see no reason to think FSU wouldn't have had the same success from 1990-2001 in the SEC East

A couple generations in the wilderness is punishment enough. The Atlanta market and history is worth some forgiveness.
