This is usually an offseason topic, but with Dooley's failing health, I don't know that I'll be able to brag this again.

When HC's retire or get fired, they typically move on.

But Athens GA is a special place. These coaches had plenty of money to live wherever they wanted after their tenure ended.

Since 1964, every UGA Head Coach still lives in Athens.

Vince Dooley
Ray Goff
Jim Donnan
Mark Richt
Kirby Smart (current HC, obviously lives there)

I think this is a hell of a testament to what a great town Athens is.

They could still live anywhere in the world they want. Anywhere. Monaco. Key West. Aspen. They all have stayed in Athens.

UGA probably screwed all of them over with minimal buyouts. They couldn’t afford to move.

Y’all probably need to get some pointers from the Aubs if you really want them to get the hell out.

Right, they all live under a tarp down by the Oconee River.

This thread is about former coaches, not linebackers and defensive backs.

Former coaches may be wealthy but rich places need a much higher citizen.

Athens is a great town, just too damn busy. We went up there first of the week. They’re after my boys, academics. They ruled it out, not that they didn’t like Athens, just not their speed. But I enjoyed it.

The university is the anchor, obviously, but it's also a hub for all of NE GA. There's two full service full size hospital high rises, not because Athens needs that many beds, but because it serves a much much larger rural area of NE GA and to the rural South of Athens. Then you have all the sprawl that grows up around that, catering to all the employees and contractors of the healthcare hub, in addition to the university hub. Athens is definitely not the "small town" it was back 30 years ago. Even neighboring Watkinsville, which was a legit legit small town 30 years ago, is now sprawled out. And neighboring Winterville, which really couldn't even be described as a town 30 years ago, it was more of an intersection with a postal code, is now hot shite with real estate prices and development going crazy. Athens isn't without its faults or downsides. But it does say something that all the former HC's of UGA still live there, when they could live anywhere they want.
