That game broke the Canes decade long dominance/swagger.
They wouldn't have another big season till like year 2000
Not quite. Miami had a pretty damn good team in '94 with Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp. Entered the Orange Bowl ranked #3 and gave national champion Nebraska all they wanted. They win that game and Penn State loses the Rose Bowl the next day they're the national champions.

It sounds so stupid now to think of not having a playoff. That was one of the better games, and I remember being absolutely certain Bama would beat them ( felt the same way almost a decade later when I thought OSU would beat Miami).

Auburn was the National Champs that year

That game was never in the 30 for 30. They never ask Lamar Thomas what he thought of getting run down and striped by Teauge...
It came up once after the game, and he tried to save face by bringing up the DB who fell down behind him. Dude never could man up enough to admit he got punked by Teague. So your typical Miami player.

I might be wrong, but that was technically the "National Championship Game" and I believe if Miami would have won the Coaches Poll was contractually required to vote them #1, just like they were in the BCS. So I think you would have had another split championship with Miami winning the Coaches Poll and Penn State winning the AP.

Will never forget "The Strip." Don't even care that the play didn't stand. George Teague was an amazing player.

Torretta is too good.
Him winning the Heisman over Hearst and Faulk was a joke

Auburn went 5-5-1 that year. 1992
They hand out trophies for that?
They were no closer than 2019 Missouri

Honey badger learned that move from Teague.

Oliver had them beat when he lined up all 11 guys on the line of scrimmage and got into Torretta's head.
Heard Toretta on one of the Sirius college sports shows a few years ago. He was a regular host. Said that after a couple of series, he was on the sideline on the headphones talking to the coaches in the box about what to do. They said he would have to give them another series or two to figure things out. Torretta tells them, "frick you!! My head's hitting the concrete on every play!!"
He said Bama fans to this day still call in and want to talk about that game. He was pretty good natured about it.

That's not how it worked under the Bowl Coalition. I believe that provision didn't get included until the Bowl Championship Series started in 1998. If Miami defeats Nebraska and Penn State wins the Rose Bowl the very next day, Penn State takes both the AP and Coaches. When Michigan and Nebraska split the championship in 1997, only 32 of the 62 coaches voted Nebraska #1 in their final poll. It was close.

I thought for sure 1994 Miami was playing for a National Title that night against Nebraska
Since the Rose Bowl wouldn’t accept Nebraska, the problem of an undefeated Penn State team not playing Nebraska occurred. Same thing happened in 1997 with Michigan and Nebraska.
Nebraska’s only undisputed title in the 1990s was 1995 when they torched undefeated Florida. There was no controversy because formerly unbeaten Ohio State lost to Michigan that year

I was a junior at Alabama and my old man gave me 2 tickets in the middle of the Miami section ten rows up in the endzone as a Christmas present and a hotel room. Best present ever.
That offensive line had a night too.

I was 12 when this game was played. Did Miami have a lot of fans back then? Were there a lot in New Orleans for the game? I know Miami is a small private school.

Miami had a ridiculous advantage in those days of playing all of their big bowl games at home.

I was told that there wasn’t a Miami section

It was probably 75-25% Ala fans that night. That number may be slightly high but not much.

The Bowl Coalition had made the agreement with the Coaches Poll that the winner would be named their champion. I know this because Alabama was undefeated in 1994 going into the SECCG, and would've played for the Coaches Poll Championship had they beat UF. Miami would've split the NC with Penn St. had they beat Nebraska.

Yes. Probably don’t beat Nebraska in ‘83 and maybe not OU in ‘87 (especially with a healthy Holieway) if those games are played in Lincoln and Norman in January.
