It averaged 4.7 million viewers on ESPN on Saturday night. What a great haul for one of the best rivalries in all of college football.

That is why the rivalry will stay in place.
It is and has been the the SEC's biggest money maker for decades.

Not saying you are wrong, but what's the basis for this statement?

Probably every UGA fan in the country was tuned in, we had a bye week and both of those teams remain on our schedule.

EDIT: Why do you think the SEC protects this game?

Doesn't really matter but Most Viewed would have been a more accurate title.

TBH, that 4.7 million number seems low for it being the most watched cable tv game of the year. Have there just not been better games this year so far?

For cable it probably is...but not if you include broadcast networks:
UGA/CLEM - 8.8 million ABC
Bama/UF - 7.8 million CBS
ND/WISC - 5.3 million FOX
OM/BAMA - 4.7 million CBS
BAMA/aTm - 8.3 million CBS
PSU/IOWA - 6.9 million FOX
OU/Texas - 5.9 million CBS
UK/UGA - 6.3 million CBS

This is laughable.
Average Television Viewership for SEC Rivalries (2013-2021):
10.716 million- Alabama vs. Auburn
10.199 million- Alabama vs. LSU
6.848 million- Alabama vs. Texas A&M
5.616 million- Georgia vs. Florida
4.982 million- Georgia vs. Auburn
4.692 million- Alabama vs. Tennessee
4.424 million- Auburn vs. LSU
**Regular season games only
You are the 4th largest "money maker" out of just Alabama's rivals. And The Cocktail Party and the DSOR are also bigger draws.

The baws are going to be doing Louisiana things instead of watching that arse beating.

I think if its a CBS game, it will still draw 5-6 million. If it falls to ESPN, it should likely draw somewhere around 4 million unless LSU somehow keeps it competitive.
