I was talking to some Alabama friends tonight and I’m not sure who was drunker. We were talking about who was offered the job after Shula. I always thought it was common knowledge Rodrigues was offered the job but his wife didn’t wanna go to a school that had “unrealistic expectations.” Am I crazy to think this? I honestly think Rodrigues would have been successful at Alabama but obviously not to the extent Saban has had. I would really appreciate honest explanations.

It sounds like your friends haven’t been Alabama fans for very long

You hear all the answers about exactly why, and the truth lies somewhere in between.

I honestly think he turned it down because of the counter offer from WVU. After all, it was his home and it is easy to see someone staying where he is already liked.
So, maybe Alabama fans do have ESPN, etc. to thank for breaking the story before the deal was finalized and provided WVU just enough time to come up with their plan.

Rich Rod wouldn’t have been successful at Bama. Maybe not terrible but I don’t think he would have been that much better than Shula.

I might be wrong but I think we can thank Paul Finebaum for Rodriguez wife getting upset. I think he said or did something to piss her off and she told her husband no thanks. I might be not remembering this correctly.

In their defense one has been a fan for 20 years the other is an alum but they were so convinced.

It's my understanding that it was Rod's job if he wanted it.

Thank God he backed out and ruined Michigan instead.
