I would imagine I'm one of the few here who admits to still enjoying the NIT.

1. What year did Alabama first go to the NIT?
2. Whom did they beat for their first win?
3. What team beat them ? Hint: Alabama played them in football that fall in a memorable/unmemorable game
4. Who coached said basketball team (Alabama's opponent) that day? He eventually had a good career as HC at an SEC school
5. What year did Alabama play its first NIT game at Coleman Coliseum? (or Tuscaloosa. No trick question. Not still Memorial or had something going on so they had to go to Foster)
6. How many times has Alabama played in the NIT Title game?

Twice - loss to basketball rival Wichita in 2011 (following year was a NCAAT birth) and Buzz Peterson and Tulsa in 2001 (following year was a SEC Title and NCAAT birth).

LOL - I was actually digging through the old NIT stuff a few days ago in looking through the old CM teams that didn't make the NCAAT because of the 1 bid rule.

Gottfried got back to back Tennessee coaches jobs between Buzz from Tulsa and Pearl from UWM.

He certainly should have been paid a headhunter commission by UT.

I had forgotten about UW-Milw and Pearl. LSU was lit up like a Christmas tree in that tourney by UAB and Mike Anderson.

It was pretty memorable to Bama fans.

Not gonna lie. I had to look this one up, but the answer is 3x SEC COY Don Devoe.

The best part about the UWM/Pearl thing is EVERY TALKING HEAD ON THE PLANET picked that as the 12/5 game. Everybody.

And our emotionless team just waltzed out and did EXACTLY what everybody said they would do. So damned frustrating. I mean, I'd take the frustration of being a #5 seed and underachieving again now, but at the time.........sheesh.

Tulsa in 2001

State was 0.1 second short from hitting a buzzer beating game winner against Tulsa in that same NIT.

Good job. Oh,I'm sure. It was such a brutal beatdown. 4 Alabama quarterbacks rushed for over 100 yards.

For years North Carolina hung this banner until the internet came along and they were shamed into taking it down.
