The Division I Men’s Basketball Committee will feature five new members for the 2021-22 season, thanks in part to the Division I Council’s approval in January of a proposal to expand from 10 to 12.

Both committees consist of one member selected from each of the five autonomy conferences and three members selected from the seven highest-ranked nonautonomy conferences based on basketball success. The remaining four members are selected from the 20 other conferences. All appointments will be for five years.

Current chair Mitch Barnhart, director of athletics at Kentucky, is completing a five-year term that began in the fall of 2016. The chair of the committee for the 2021-22 season is Tom Burnett, commissioner of the Southland Conference.

The Big Ten’s representative will now be Mark Coyle, the director of athletics at Minnesota. The Pac-12 Conference will be represented by UCLA Athletics Director Martin Jarmond. Other first-year committee members include Keith Gill, the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, and Barry Collier, who will be representing the Big East Conference as the director of athletics at Butler.

The Southeastern Conference’s appointment is Greg Byrne, the director of athletics at Alabama. Byrne, who has been in his current role since 2017, previously served in the same position at Arizona and Mississippi State and worked in the athletics departments at Kentucky, Oregon State and Oregon. Byrne holds degrees from Arizona State and Mississippi State.

I was thinking he would get caught up in the Arizona basketball scandal, but who really cares anymore, right?

I heard him this morning on WJOX and he sounded like a pretty sharp guy. Granted, he is probably corrupt, but most of our AD's are, in the SEC. I think our AD,A. Green is probably the least corrupt, but he's young and if he stays in the SEC, he'll get there. Jethro Jacobs before him? Not so much corrupt as just stupid.

Byrne is the best AD Bama has had in the modern era and it’s not very close.

Moore was a great ambassador for Bama. Byrne has so far shown to be one of the better ADs in the country. The way he is handling hires is top drawer.

If you have information of cheating please contact the FBI. You know, like the last Boog who put together a notebook of all the violations Bama was involved in.

Not surprising. Greg just turned down the opportunity to be the Commish of the Pac 12 conference. The guy is a mover and shaker in college athletics. Keeping him in Tuscaloosa is the best way possible to keep the dynasty moving in the SEC.

He is a very sharp guy, but part of it is because he's more of this modern AD class that we've never really seen before.

What once was seen as a job for coaches (like Mal Moore), these guys coming along are more like executives focused on operations with knowledge of strategic planning and capital budgeting.

Byrne's father Bill was the AD at Texas A&M, and Greg was literally raised to do this job. (As opposed to an older coach who retired into it.)

He's one of the best right now, but he's not unique - it's just a trend to a different style that we're seeing all around the country.

Exactly what I'd expect a holier than thou AU cult member to say.

I give Moore the benefit of the doubt, becoming AD at a turbulent time. His legacy will always be the stadium expansion and of course hiring that Nick Saban guy.

No doubt, Moore represented the University well.

He was simply an Alabama man through-and-through, working in multiple capacities and spending his entire life trying to help the place and the people that he loved.

There aren't too many of those true Southern gentleman types left.

Mal Moore landed Nick Saban and set the foundations for what Byrne is building, but looking across the other sports Byrne has taken it to far greater heights:
Basketball: SEC champs, sweet 16
W BBall: 1st tournament in forever
M/W Golf: nationally competitive
Softball: top 5/10 consistently

None of that happens without the football revenue from Mal hiring Saban, but the overall health of the athletic department is as good as it’s ever been.
