Even if OP doesn't know if they're players, if they are players, then he's telling the truth.
If they aren't players, then he's lying.
The "truth" isn't dependent on what the OP actually knows, it's dependent on if they're actually players or not, thus by saying he's been "caught lying," you're stating that the young men in question are not Aggie football players.
