His "personal assistant, Mike McKenzie ... author of the infamous newsletter.

I was on the team that got beat bad by Utah and OU. Fran ran a similar program to Saban without the results. He was an absolute dick from the very beginning. He would berate his coaches in front of the team. When no one respects you, and you're losing, shite gets real. I've never despised a human being more than that "man."
Terrence Murphy laid bare a lot of what happened in the locker room on a famous thread on Texags a couple of years ago.

He leached off of other coaches recruits at every stop. Brian Urlacher at NM, LT at TCU, a slew of good recruits at Bama...then he got to a barren A&M squad and didnt have much talent and screwed up the one great talent we had.

I've always wondered how he was pretty solid at Alabama and failed so miserably at Texas A&M.
Because he inherited more talent at Alabama, then he did at TAMU.
The 3 recruiting classes before Fran arrived at each school...
Alabama
1998: Superprep rated 6th class in the country
1999: Superprep rated 6th class in the country
2000: Superprep rated 5th class in the country
Texas A&M
2000: Superprep rated = 27th class in the country
2001: Superprep rated = 29th class in the country
2002: Rivals rated = 23rd class in the country

Couldn't stand that guy. Fran thought he was the President or something, needing his own personal assistant / press guy.

I'm a little surprised it took this many posts for the newsletter to come up. To me the $1200 VIP Connection newsletter showed a remarkable lack of... well, lots of things. Propriety for one. I'd like to think not, but I'd guess A&M would have overlooked it if his teams won.

Oh god, the horror of seeing smoke draw and option to the short side over and over and over.
He turned one of the best offenses in CFB into one of the worst of the modern era. That takes talent. I'm pretty sure he saw Dick-Rod's offense and assumed he could do the same with Reggie. When Tennessee exposed us in the Cotton, he already received an extension, albeit because Notre Dame came calling. After that i think he just tried to frick the dog. Poor Reveille.

Very interesting thread. Hadn't really thought about the guy in a while. I knew he sucked at A&M but didn't bother to look into the reasons. Great thread except for the (predictable) LSU fans douchihng everyting up.

I have nightmares of the Holiday bowl 45-10, Cal was good that year but they weren't that good... We didn't even look excited to be there, the team was always flat when Fran was coach. They never seemed hyped to play... Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett pimp slapped the whole A&M team

It was the Tennessee Cotton Bowl that convinced me to finally dump our season tickets.

Like hell it was.
200K for Albert Means and Cam only goes for 180 a decade later?
Spending a lot =/= buying the best.
