The truth is that he's not as great as Aggies think he is and not as awful as LSU fans make him out to be. He's a competent DC - above average in my opinion - whose legend was made bigger than his actual talent by the schools he coached for and the era in which he coached them.

He benefited greatly from having tons of blue chip defensive talent at both UT and LSU. Defense is much more about Xs and Os than it is Larrys and Joes.

He also benefited greatly from LSU's ball-control offense. I don't know how to characterize UTs offense while he was there, but I'm guessing it wasn't shotgun, 5-wide.

At A&M he has neither defensive talent nor a complementary offense - in fact, A&M's offense 3-and-outed more than anyone in the country last season and we haven't had a single SEC quality LBer since we've been in the conference.

Billy Liucci would be a better D Coordinator than Chavis.

I would describe Anthoney Hines, Tyrel Dodson, DaShaun White as a very talented group of young LB's.

All recruited by Chavis and light years better than what we were getting before Chavis.

He's been an incredible letdown. Here's hoping his and Sumlin's time are both coming to an end in CS

Yep, texas a&m fans are finally realizing that LSU fans were right about chavis...Tennessee fans tried to tell LSU fans about him too, but we didn't believe them until we saw it. The only reason we had a great defense under chavis was strictly bc of the filthy fricking defensive talent that LSU had on those teams he coached. Texas am is a softer program than LSU is too for some reason, and that contributes alot to their failures stopping the run. They get shoved around by physical teams and have been for some time now Anyway, im glad to hear that 3rd and chavis lives on...I'm also glad it's not at LSU. Lol, aranda is 10x the defensive coordinator chief is, and aggy thought they stuck it to us...jokes on you ags.

The only time he recruited for aTm was when he was still supposed to be coaching at LSU for the music city bowl

Chavis' crowning achievement was 2011. After that....suck.

LSU D in 2011 was mostly NFL talent, How much was Chavis and how much was better athletes on his D.

I agree with the beginning and ending of your thought but I cannot agree with this. Offense is much more scheme and timing. Defense is much more about being a 700 lb gorilla with a chainsaw penis fricking shut up.

We have seen historically less skilled offenses put up massive numbers. You never see less skilled defenses consistently dominate overskilled, property coached offenses

Aggies continue to squander their opportunities. That's what makes them Aggies. Joining the SEC was nothing more than swapping big brothers. Unloading Chavez and that sack of cheeseburgers he keeps in his pants on our unsuspecting Little Brother was one of the shittier things we have done to them.

Sorry, but the mods here at SECRANT have s longstanding policy of anchoring Chavis threads. I'm sure this thread will be gone in no time.

If Sumlin is fired after this season I really hope A&M keeps Chavis. Please sign him to a 5 year extension.

I'm hearing good things about the defense this year. But if it doesn't work out, we'll just hire Arranda.

Sure A&M can hire anybody they want. This has helped A&M win zero national championships in the last 80 years.

Chavis did LSU a huge favor because we have Aranda now. Upgrade.

He had two amazing DTs in Brockers and Logan, both NFL starters. They really were the unsung heroes and backbone of the team. Then layer on Mingo, Montgomery, Minter, Reid, and Mathieu. That defense was one of the all-time greats.

Unfortunately there was another all-time great defense on another team that year .....

We'll we will probably fire Chavis and Sumlin after this year. You dipsticks are stuck with Coach O for at least 3 years.

Kliff Kingsbury would have been a successful def. coordinator with the players that defense had.
