A look back: 1996 UGa @ Auburn

I’ll take a stab at starting a football thread. I’ve been reminiscing about old games a lot lately. I’d like to hear what the board remembers about this game. For me, it’s a relatively under the radar great game in SEC history. It won’t be mentioned with 2007 UF-LSU, or the Kick Six, etc, but is still an all-timer IMO.
I remember watching this game, not believing what was unfolding. The Dawgs came in at 3-5, fresh off a beat down in the WLOCP. I remember they had some goofy-scoring games. A look back confirms this. Georgia lost the opener 11-7 against Southern Miss, and netted a 15-12 win against Texas Tech, as well as a 13-2 victory over Kentucky.
Jim Donnan was in his first year after leading Marshall to 4 straight FCS title games. The quotable Joe Kines was DC and Mike Bobo was QB.
Auburn was 7-2 and ranked 20th. Terry Bowden wasn’t completely fat yet. The Tigers two losses came against LSU when the Barn Burned, and a meltdown against Florida.
Georgia trailed 28-7 at the half before engineering a comeback that culminated with a game-tying (PAT pending) 30 yard TD pass from Bobo to Cory Allen. This was the last play of regulation, and set up the SEC’s first OT game. Lost in the madness was Uga jumping at Auburn WR Robert Baker after a 1st quarter TD.
The teams traded blows until Georgia outlasted Auburn 56-49. The Bulldogs finished 5-6. Donnan’s troops went 35-13 during his remaining four seasons in Athens, including a 10-2 season in 1997.
Auburn would finish 8-4. Their season ended with a 24-23 loss in the Iron Bowl, and a 32-29 win over Army in Shreveport. The 1997 Tigers joined Georgia (and Tennessee and Florida) with 10 wins, and endured a heartbreaking loss to Tennessee in Atlanta. The Bowden era came to an abrupt end in 1998.
This is an overlooked SEC classic. Anybody on here attend that game?

I remember I was working in a bar and didnt get much work done.
I never had a kind word for bobo before that game. I did a 180 after watching the comeback, though.

November 11, 1996. My wife’s 30th birthday. I was just about to walk out the door to the event hall for her surprise birthday party when we scored the second TD. 85 people waited 2 hours for me to get There....all of them knew exactly where I was....she never said a word other than had I left the house before the end of the game she’d have been pissed! I married WAY better than she did......

Georgia's last losing season. I believe that's the longest streak in the country.
ETA: last bowl-less season

You're missing 2010 with a miserable bowl lost vs UCF to put us at 6-7

Said screw it and went deer hunting as the game was not going out way, left, shot a deer, took to processor, stopped for grocery and booze, got back hours later, and watched us win. Awesome.

I saw a replay of that game. Auburn had no answer for Georgia RB Robert Edwards. Edwards was just too much.

This was the wildest of all of the wild UGA/AU games. Hines Ward was unstoppable. Georgia kept running the counter trey with Robert Edwards and Torin Kirtsey and Auburn couldn't stop it. Dameyune Craig was also unstoppable.
Craig is one of the most underrated players in the SEC in the last 25 years. He would be a perfect fit for Gus's offense.

I remember that this game took place a couple of months after my dad died. I was helping a friends dad move his neighbors to make some extra cash and this was on in the background. I couldn't believe how many overtimes it went too since OT was new that year.

I watched it on a little portable tv in the parking lot of the Ala-MSU game in Starkville. MSU beat Ala that night. It was freezing.
