A defense of Gus

I know this is odd timing given that he just lost but let me say the following:
1. He has given us a top ten recruiting class every year he has been our HC except for last year when we were ranked 11. This gives us the ability to be competitive year in and year out.
2. He has greatly improved as a game manager. Just look at how he did last year versus LSU to how he did this year.
3. How many other coaches have beaten Saban twice as a head coach?
4. Auburn’s winning percentage has been higher under Gus than any other coach in the last twenty years.
It is easy to see his flaws but when you look at the big picture, Auburn fans should generally be pleased with how he has done.

He's in the same state as the GOAT program with the GOAT coach in the midst of a GOAT dynasty. In five full seasons, he's averaging 9 wins a year, has beaten Bama twice, has a conference title, another trip to Atlanta, a trip to the NC, and had them in position for the CFP until the SECCG last year. I honestly do not think Auburn could do any better right now.

Gus is probably the best Auburn can do.

Which is pretty damn good right?

would have been interesting to see kirby at AU had they made that hire instead of gus.

Probably wouldn't have been as successful as he now is at UGA.

I agree although 9 wins a year isn’t much to brag about. Gus has a ways to go and I’m sure he knows that.

Ehh. For Auburn it is.... other schools have higher standards

he is 80% of what you have in great coaches but its the missing 20% that is killing us...decision making and the ability to adjust....he should have gotten over that hump...we could do worse, though, and probably would

If by "other Schools" you mean Alabama than I would agree. Since 2013 Auburn has been right up there with the top schools in the SEC, not named Bama. One NC appearance, one SEC West title.

He is a good coach. Saturday was a tossup no one is to blame on AU’s side.

He just got beat by this...

Came in after Bama's status was already well established and still manages to be competitive

Gus and Coach Jordan's timing against Coach Bryant and Nick Saban has taken away many many wins that might have gone on the barn side.

Kirby would have left for UGA since he is a Georgia guy. That would have crashed Auburn to find a replacement all over again!

Les Miles never got over those humps.

So he is on par with Hugh Freeze?
