Watchstadium survey
quote:

Of the 130 FBS athletic directors Stadium reached out to, 112 responded to our anonymous survey.

quote:

A whopping 88 percent of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic directors want an expanded College Football Playoff when the current playoff contract ends after the 2025 regular season, according to a survey conducted by Stadium. Of those athletic directors who favor an expanded playoff, 72 percent believe eight teams should qualify. Also, 66 percent of the ADs said the highest-ranked non-Power Five team should receive an automatic bid to an expanded playoff.

quote:

Of that group, 72 percent prefer an eight-team model, 11 percent want either 12 or 16 teams, 5 percent want six teams and only 12 percent want the playoff to remain at four teams.

With that much support, the number of teams is likely to increase when the current arrangement expires after the 2025 season.

Yeah it’s gonna move to 8 for sure. What’s gonna be interesting is how they determine the 8. Conference champions with at-larges? By committee? A computer formula?

This is retarded though. Like sending lambs to lions.

Could you imagine what Joe Burrow would have done to Cincinnati or Memphis in the first round of the playoffs? Good god.

They’re gonna have to have some sort of G5 playoff to determine that spot. They’re gonna start crying when an undefeated San Diego State gets in over a team like UCF that plays more P5 schools.

It will be fun to kick the shite out of UCF though to shut that little saducfmanginaknight up

Cheapens the games too much.

That is not one of their concerns.

It would be better than to have undeserving teams (looking at you OU) playing in the CFP. I’ve always thought that having 8 was the best way. Example for the SEC:

If #1 Bama and #3 UGA were both undefeated and both were top 3, UGA loses a squeaker in the SECCG, should UGA be removed over a zero loss shitty OU or Clemson team due to a small loss against the #1? That would mean you’re matching up inferior teams in the CFP. Only way to avoid such a situation is to expand the number of teams.

I do see your reasoning however.

When your job security is largely determined by how often your football team makes the playoff, practically every AD is going to want to double their odds of making it. Which is why it will eventually expand from 8 to 16 as well.

Really, with the major arse whippings going on now in the playoffs with just 4 selected teams, what makes you think selecting another 2-4 that aren’t as good will do. Just saying

A 16 team playoff would but not a 8 team playoff. It still seems like a no-brainer to me to have 8 teams with the 5 P5 champions and 3 at large, including any non-P5 undefeated teams.

AQ is stupid.

If your conference champion can't make the top8, there is a very good reason for it.

Also the same can be said about the top4, which still makes SoS worth something.

No it wouldn't. It literally means adding more undeserving teams to the playoff. First round games are already almost never competitive.

The only reason to go beyond four is to get in some really weak conference champions that could never make it otherwise. Looking at you Big 12 and PAC 12.

I wouldn't mind it expanding to 8. It rewards teams that have to play difficult regular seasons a bit more than a 4 team playoff. The biggest setback that I worry about is the physical burden on these players that have to play 16 games to reach a national championship. I wouldn't be surprised if conferences considered dropping their championship games if this were to happen.

Eliminate the FCS game that no one gives a frick about. And sometimes lose. Nothing to gain by playing FCS. Give teams another bye week instead.

Better yet make it a ninth SEC game

I think this is a little misleading. There are five Power 5 programs and five Group of 5 programs. Of course the Group of 5 want expansion because they have no realistic chance with just 4. That means minimum 50% are going to say yes to expansion.

I also assume Big 12 and Pac 12 have a higher % because they have been shut out of the playoff. But I bet the SEC is happy with four.

I agree it will go to 8 but I think the Group of 5 will be out of luck. This will ensure every Power five conference gets at least one team, and SEC and Big Ten will usually get two each and then we will see.

The TV money will be ridiculous but ESPN ain't paying to get UCF, Memphis or Boise. Maybe every now and then but setting up a rule that one of them gets in automatically. No way!
