82 bowl bids available, only 77 teams remaining. Let's try a new one-time playoff system.

Fun times for the bowls: 41 bowls & 82 bowl bids will be available but only 77 teams currently scheduled to play FBS this fall.
Also, one industry source questions if there can still be a @CFBPlayoff: "Hard to have a national championship without a bunch of teams"
ETA:
I'm starting to lean towards inviting the remaining Group of 5 teams into this thing and having some sort of expanded championship series with a wildcard play-in, like March Madness.
Giving those teams a chance to compete would be fun, even if it ended quickly, and it would be amazing if a cinderella G5 team made a deep run.
This would be a great (one-off) time to try out a new playoff system, especially if this season is going to be filled with asterisks anyway.

Some teams can double up!

Nah... assuming things stay as they are, it isn't the fault of the SEC, ACC and Big 12 that the Pac 12 and B1G aren't playing football. Just go with the champs of those 3 and one at large from either one of those 3 conferences or a Group of 5 team.

Well, if this was a few decades ago they would have just declared Notre Dame national champs, even if they refused to play football.

It’ll be a better playoff without a pity pick of a team from the Lame 10 or LAC-12.

lol, you mean "without one team"
OSU is the only team that would even be close to making the playoff, something tells me 4 teams out of the SEC/Big12/ACC+ND can fill out a 4 team playoff just fine.

I'm sure whatever team wins will have an * next to this year's national title when it's listed.
I'm also sure the team and fans won't care.

My guess is many of the bowls will cancel this year anyway. Just have the NY6 and maybe a few of the more popular bowls, like the Citrus. No need to have any of the bowls held out West except for the Fiesta and Rose. Who knows, Cali may not allow the Rose to be played anyway.

DawgCountry,
You don't even know that Arkansas is going 0-10 before you judge. Also, why bring up Arkansas in every single post.

I thought they had already cancelled it. Or is that just the parade?

We have a pretty good idea, though.

Good point.

I mean it’s a reasonable assumption. I also don’t even think I’ve mentioned Arky on this site. Calm your hog tits

It'll be like the Louisiana high school playoffs nowadays where you have a 1 win team making it into the post season

If it ends up just being two conferences, say SEC vs ACC, the two conference champions can play in the title game like it's the Super Bowl. You can then also have roughly about 8 meaningful inter-conference post-season bowls as filler.
If you have 3 (or more) conferences, the playoffs can go on as usual, and a shortened bowl list as filler for the leftover teams.

Yep, that would be fun! And would give meaning to those games that would otherwise be filler bowls.
But for this year only. Any other year, it's just a tournament style expanded playoff many have argued for that would ultimately make "big" regular season games practically meaningless, as both "great teams" already know they are playoff-bound.
