Shift to 4 major 16 team conferences
Each 8 team division gets a bid
1st round is conference championships
4 conference champions go to semifinals

Maybe add some kind of relegation aspect so teams have a chance to move up in the world. Every 6 years or something.

Every year at least 2 teams get left out.

I can see this...and give #1 and #2 a bye. Have 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5.

Then winner of 3 vs 6 vs #1 and winner of 4 vs 5 vs #2.

8 is too many at the college level.

Let’s devalue the best regular season in sports so the #7 team in the country can feel special!!!!

It does not devalue the reg season. Still can’t lose more than 1game.

Which teams have been left out that you feel would have beat the eventual champ?

Who are the teams that should get in this YTD?

Why? If we go to 8, #9 will bitch. Then you end up with 68 team NCAA tourney and the regular season doesn’t matter. As it is, the top teams get one mulligan at best. Go to 8 teams and one loss won’t mean a tinkers damn. With 4 teams, somebody’s getting left out. That reality, that’s life. Everybody doesn’t get a trophy. Win your fricking games and it doesnt matter. An undefeated Power 5 team is virtually guaranteed a spot.

I don't think an 8 team playoff would devalue the regular season. Any more would though. At 8 playoff spots those late season rivalry games matter a lot more. I think 6 makes more sense right now though so that the two best teams get byes.

ETA: with a six team format:

2014:

#1 Alabama - bye
#2 Oregon - bye

#3 Florida State vs #6 TCU
#4 Ohio State vs #5 Baylor

2015:

#1 Clemson bye
#2 Alabama bye

#3 Michigan State vs #6 Stanford
#4 Oklahoma vs #5 Iowa

2016:

#1 Alabama bye
#2 Clemson bye

#3 Ohio State vs #6 Michigan
#4 Washington vs #5 Penn State

I was saying 8 is too much. If you go to 8, you really have to shorten the regular season to be honest. These are not grown men, you're talking about 18-22 year old KIDS.

6 with #1/#2 getting a bye is enough. It's similar to the NFL playoffs, just for a much bigger group of teams.

with the BCS there was always at most 3 teams deserving and with the current system 4 teams get in. The most important part is the top 3 teams are in and 4 is just a lucky team. 4 is plenty.

In no year has the 8th ranked team ever been on the same level as the top ranked teams.

Stupid shite.

Also, you forgot part of your post:

something something refs Bama something something cheaters something something

There, fixed it for you.

That's BS. FCS and Division II/III have long arse seasons. Are they not 18-22 yo kids too?

They mean a great deal even if both teams are winless. They mean a great deal in the 4 team system. Hell, the BCS actually worked really well, it's just the fans and media couldn't handle the rematch in 2011.

We have a de facto 10 team playoff as it is. The P5 all have championship games which are almost playin games to the playoff. No need to add another layer. If you do, the championship games become virtually meaningless. If Bama is #1 and undefeated heading to Atlanta to face undefeated #2 UGA, why should we play our starters and risk injury? Why should we tip our hand and actually game plan for an opponent we may see in a bigger game 2 weeks later? Seeding?? Is it worth that??

There’s a LOT of problems with going to 8. Where do you play them? Home field in Dec in Ann Arbor is a huge advantage. As is Miami. Think it through.
