Sorry, real football talk
If you’re the head coach at a P5 school that doesn’t have the infrastructure to recruit at an elite level, how do you approach recruiting with the activity currently in the transfer portal. Do you start taking a bunch of transfers or do you still stick mainly to HS and only supplement lightly with them?

I would say it depends on what you want at that time. I believe you have to stick to building your future. Got to bring in the recruits and develop them, but it won't hurt to bring in a few from the portal to contribute right away.

Immediate eligibility is going to change the game too. Schools will be more likely to take on transfers if they don’t have to tie up a scholly for a year while they sit

I mean that is basically what Mullen did here. He finally seems to be turning a corner a bit with some big commits now.

i think transfers in general don't have the work ethic or confidence to get the job done and punch above their weight. They are transferring "typically" because they just aren't good enough and/or don't get treated the way they want to be treated.
I think coaches at those schools are better off finding recruits that excel in specific areas that may not be as well rounded overall athletes like the higher ranked recruits. Find specific traits that fit your system, build them up with a great weight training program and rely on them as juniors and seniors. If you win enough you'll move up the ranking ladders naturally.

I think the path is definitely to take high profile transfer quarterbacks, and recruit/develop other positions. This would probably be the best pathway to big success at a school where it's harder to acquire talent.

Well, this is certainly our experience with our last two QB transfers!

JuCo works for some. We've had a few pretty decent guys that way. Zadarius Smith comes to mind.

Yeah, I might be jaded on this as a Mizzou fan. Our transfers in have a WAY higher failure rate than success rate. Most of them have appeared to be locker room cancers, too.

Seems like Hazelton has been the only quality transfer we’ve got in awhile that wasn’t a JUCO guy.

Yeah, i don't see JUCOs being included in these conversations. Juco kids are kids that had to go a different route, put in the work an did what they needed to do to get to a FBS after that. Those kids aren't quitters.

Our Center from Rutgers is playing well too. Gtad transfers are different. They got their degree and just want to try something new.

Jordan Elliot and in fairness the Arkansas receiver was good with a functional qb position.

The one free transfer rule is going to massively change the game. I think G5 programs are going to get RAVAGED as good high character kids that are stars will be recruited to the big boys. Whereas a lot of current transfers have chemistry or character issues. If I’m a team like, well Missouri, I’m keeping an eye on star freshmen/sophomore G5 players and sending out some birds to let them know you may have a spot for them if interested in playing in the SEC.
