In 1995. DiNardo's clock management skills were almost Les Miles' tier. I'm not really old enough to remember, but was it common for the team with the better record to play conservative with a tie basically assured? LSU was 3-1 and SCar was 1-3

quote:

LSU wide receiver Sheddrick Wilson, who left the game in the first half with a sprained left knee and ankle, did his best Willis Reed impression and willed his way to catching a 19-yard touchdown from quarterback Jamie Howard with 1:06 left in the game. Although this was not a game-winning catch, it did allow the Tigers to salvage a tie in a hostile environment.

This is how the Associated Press described Wilson’s gutsy performance in its postgame story.

“Wilson limped most of the second half after getting helped off the field in the second quarter. But he sped past safety Chris Abrahams, slanting toward the middle of the field to make the catch that cut South Carolina’s lead to 20-19.”

Despite being hobbled, Wilson finished with 6 receptions for 93 yards and the late touchdown.

So why wouldn’t LSU’s first-year coach Gerry DiNardo go for the 2-point conversion and the win? The Tigers had one of the best defenses in the country that season and DiNardo had faith that LSU could get one more stop in the final minute and have a chance to perhaps win the game.

“I didn’t hesitate at all,” DiNardo said. “I knew what I was going to do. I thought our defense was going to get the ball back.”

So rather than send the offense back out onto the field for the 2-point try, LSU kicker Andre Lafleur tied the game up at 20 with an extra point.

I was at the game. I didn't realize that was the answer to a trivia question.

We go every time LSU plays in S.C. because we like to vacation in Charleston. We were driving to Charleston when it was announced that the flood game was being moved to B.R. and continued on to Charleston anyway.

I remember being in 5th grade watching the end of this game with my dad not knowing how the frick i was supposed to feel. He reminded me how shite the previous couple seasons went so we were just both glad we didn’t lose.

LSU hadn't been to a bowl since the 1988 season, so I guess the mindset was tie>>>risking eligibility. Could 5-5-1 teams make bowls?

Not sure, but the last 5 or so games of that season were great outside of that 10-3 loss at bama. Once the infamous purple pants Kentucky game was over we beat the shite out of everyone. That Arkansas game was an incredible performance.

Whupped Saban's first Michigan State team in the Indy Bowl too. I think that team was better than it's 7-4-1 record, just hadn't fully "learned to win" until late in the season

The very first college football game I remember watching was when Florida State came back from a 31-3 deficit to tie Florida 31-31. I was very confused when the game ended. The outcome of the game hasn't been decided yet. Why are they shaking hands at midfield? I should have been enthralled by Florida State's incredible comeback but the game ending in a tie just left me with an empty feeling. Anyway, I think it was common back then for teams to go for a tie because Bowden didn't get any heat for not going for two late in the game.

Ties are the exact reason I can’t watch soccer. My father in law loves that shite and I sat down and watched a game with him once and after 2 fricking hours it finished 0-0.

I was furious. Garbage arse sport

I was in 8th grade and super annoyed we tied. This was a JP 11:30 special if I recall?

My Dad and I took the train to Tuscaloosa for this game, which was pretty fun. Dennis Riddle scored the only TD of the game for Bama. My first time at Dreamland.

It felt like we tied every year back in my formative years watching (late 70s thru mid-80s). I was at the infamous 1982 Tennessee tie and the 1987 Ohio State tie.

Teams wouldn't get penalized for a tie like they should have been back then. Teams that were competing for the national championship would sometimes settle for a tie, believing it would be enough and sometimes it was enough.

I thought ties were interesting, because they offered opportunities for debate. The problem was that the logic used was applied unequally, such that ties were counted as wins for big teams, but losses with smaller ones. But it was always interesting to see if a couch would play for the tie or to win the game outright.

I find it hard to believe we ever tied LSU, they must have really been down that season.

They finished with their 3rd best record of the 90s, so not really. The LSU we know today began with Saban.
