Until Football is back. What’s your favorite Saturday tradition? I get up early, cut the grass then start prepping the food to throw on the grill. Usually some combination of ribeyes and strips with pork loin, burgers, dogs and brats. Publix fried chicken wings, sweet tea and spinach artichoke dip are staples too. What y’all do in your neck of the woods?

That used to be my life, but 7 years ago we had this tiny human who to this day wakes up with the sun.

If it’s in Athens, I’m on campus before sunrise setting up the tv, tent, and grill.

If it’s away, I wake up to watch Gameday start then go outside to garden and do yard work until Noon. From then on, it’s booze and food until night. My wife allows this so long as I yield Sundays to her for frivolous errands.

First Saturday each year we either tailgate at the game or at home and do boiled crabs and shrimp with some chargrilled oysters and my wife makes a king cake.

Can’t wait

I like to get up early and head down to Pacific Beach for some surfing. Then walk back to my place to shower and smoke a bowl. Next I’ll usually walk down to Shore Club to grab some tasty breakfast (chorizo omelette is my fave). By then the first games are starting so I’ll head back to my place to start prepping whatever I’m grilling or smoking for the game while watching. Usually have plenty of people come and go throughout the day, so I’ll have plenty of beer, guacamole, salsa, and other snacks out. My Jimmy Buffet Margarita maker station will also be in action. I make sure that the brisket or Boston but or ribs or whatever is done before Bama kicks off because once that happens I’m not leaving the couch. Afterwards it’s nice to go down to one of the beach bars to catch some late night PAC football.

When the weather calls for it, get a pot of gumbo rolling at the house so it’s ready for the Big10 games. Find an outside bar for the 2:30 SEC games. Post up for the LSU night games at one of the big sports bars around town. Stagger home late night to feed my garbage palate and watch Pac10 after dark.

We only get 13 of these regular season weekends each year. You’ve got to make the most of them.

Making sure I know what time the game starts so I can record it, start watching an hour or so later, so I can fast forward commercials, and halftime.

Bourbon, beer, and barbecue are the staples at my house on gameday. Usually have guys over early so we can jam for a while during other games on TV in the background. Some Saturdays I just go down to Commonwealth and tailgate hop, some times I go to the game. Sometimes its good to go out to the bar and get wings and pitchers. All depends on the collective group consensus. But at my house, you can count on the smoker going early if Im hosting, bourbon, and cold beer.
