A source close to the situation told GoVols247 on Friday that former Tennessee national championship-winning quarterback Tee Martin would listen to an offer of associate head coach, offensive coordinator and perhaps even head-coach-in-waiting if Fulmer hired Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele as head coach.

quote:

Steele, a former Tennessee player and assistant coach, has been at Auburn the past two seasons, leading an impressive turnaround on that side of the ball on The Plains. The Tigers are ninth in scoring defense and 11th nationally in total defense. Multiple former Tennessee players have led an aggressive charge this week to get Martin — currently the offensive coordinator at USC — an interview for the head-coaching position, and Martin initially had little-to-no interest in making a lateral move back to his alma mater as an assistant. That situation seems to have changed in light of the change at athletic director.

Sounds like the exact scenario Finebaum was presenting on TV when I got home from work this evening. Only he added third and Chavis as the DC.

Yeah. They are just desperate now and don't care. They haven't figured out some coaches are just good coordinators and never good HCs.

There is literally no one that wants the job at this point that won't look like a failure.

Would Tenn fans like that?

I love what Steele has done here, and would hate to see him leave.

But Hell if he can take an HC position, more power to him.

I know I shouldn’t but I feel more sorry for the Vols every single day that goes by.

This is SO sad.

The only logical thing is:

Les Miles HC
Tee Martin OC / AHC / CIW
Chief Chavis DC

Why are you rolling on the floor? Tee has called plays for two years now, they have a top 15 offense nationally, he's got a likely top 5 pick at QB, and he is one of the most elite recruiters in the country.

Tee is a great recruiter and could possible be a solid head coach one day. But his OC skills are very much questioned by quite a few folks out West.

That's a hella risky idea with Steele's history. Not to mention if he is HCIW he is severely limited on the recruiting front, which is his best talent.

Honestly, I don't fvckin get it.
