Never been done

1980: You can't start a freshman at running back. Won't work.

Food for thought

Can I get a source for either of those statements?

Bama almost did it last year.

I believe it’s more appropriate to say “you can’t win a national championship with a freshman pocket passer.”

The ability to run out of trouble masks a lot of shortcomings.

That's true and Alabama and Hurts had a remarkable season.

But if some other team's fan had posted that "almost" the Gumps on this board would have come out like starving roaches for crumbs on the floor mocking the guy.

Coach Bryant used to have the general thought that each freshman you started was worth about one loss on your overall record.

Things have changed. Particularly the athletes.

Redshirt or true freshman?

Oklahoma had a true freshman QB in the 80's when they won.

Jameis Winston was a Redshirt Freshman in 2013.

Wow. I didn't know this. In fairness, it's still not a good idea to have too many freshmen starting for you.

Jamelle Holieway was a true freshman in 1985 when he ran the wishbone to a NC for OU

This is still definitely true. To be fair, Coach Bryant spent most of his career coaching in an era that Freshmen weren’t even eligible to play. The NCAA didn’t grant eligibility to freshmen in football until 1972. Again, certainly a different era for coaching and especially the physical development of the athletes.

Most on here do not realize how far training has come in the last 40-50 years. Weight training was not a high priority years ago. Certainly, in the 70's they lifted, but not to the degree they do today. A lot of the high schools in Georgia had just began lifting them in the mid 70's, and some did not at all.

Perhaps even more relevant...he coached in an era when great players didn't leave early for the draft. When everyone stays for their senior year, it rarely gives a freshman an opportunity.
