Just rewatching this for the first time and it was every bit as good as I remembered. I think it's one of more pivotal games too: Tennessee has never reached that point again and it really established Saban and LSU on the national scene.

Tennessee looked like they were shocked that LSU came to play (we were only 5-3 in the SEC that season with some bad losses) and they might have been primed for a letdown after playing so well to beat Florida in Gainesville the week prior, that game was rescheduled due to 9/11.

Let's also remember that Texas had blown its shot at the BCS championship game that same day against Colorado in the Big 12 championship game, so the BCS was thrown into chaos and somehow picked Nebraska over Oregon and Colorado; the latter two teams would've at least given Miami a decent game IMO but only Tennessee or Florida had the talent to beat the Canes.

Lol at the grounds crew being so inept they didn't dry the endzone paint, a Tennessee player's helmet was like half purple after landing in it.

Or you could just skip the game and see Junior and Lulu in HD at 1:12:35 LINK

I was sitting in the upper section of the dome shitting in my pants when Saban went for that 4th down in our own territory.

They show a segment where he calls it his worst coaching decision ever, but Bama's fake punt on 4th and 23 against Texas in that BCS title game was pretty bad too. Neither ended up costing him

The fake punt against Texas was a complete misread by PJ Fitzgerald. That was never called from the sideline.

Tennessee thought that win was a formality and would be playing Miami in the Rose Bowl. That loss was a turning point for them

I don’t think this is true considering the game we played in Knoxville earlier in the season was very close.

If Kelly Washington did not have 11 catches for 256 yards, we would’ve lost that game as well.

Randy Sanders was just an awful OC and Chavis couldn’t stop a mobile QB. Combined with Phil’s tendency to shite the bed in big games after the turn of the century and that SECCG result really wasn’t that surprising.

That Tennessee team was stacked. Would have given Miami a much better game than Nebraska that's for sure.

2001 was a strange season all around.

Probably one of the 2/3 most talented VOLS squads OAT.

What's bizarre to me is that they didn't throw to Witten much, he had less than 300 yards receiving in 2001!

I was there and remember UT fans carrying roses to the game. They were left on the Georgia Dome concourses floors after the game.

I remember watching this game as a 12 year old and rooting for Tennessee because South Carolina would go to the Citrus bowl if they won. Which would have been a huge deal for our program at the time. However with Tennessee losing and them falling to the Citrus bowl we ended up in the Outback bowl for the 2nd year in a row. Although that resulted in South Carolina beating Ohio state for two consecutive years so maybe it worked out for the best.

Was there, and I’ll never forget it. Mostly I’ll never forget the mighty UT Vol fans giving us shite outside the stadium by the droves. You had to watch your step or you’d step in some orange. It was everywhere, but then after the game on the way down the ramps all you could hear was Tiger fans chanting and saying “It’s Great to be an LSU Tiger...”. And all Vol heads were hung low. That’s honestly when I knew for a fact that LSU Football was back. What a moment, and what a game by the Tigers. They showed so much heart.
