Who else remembers this? Moscona (local radio guy) just brought that game up. I was there: Kentucky was coached by Hal Mumme, had a tall, strong-armed QB (Tim Couch) and a fairly unknown offensive coordinator named... Mike Leach!
LSU was ranked and had a much better and very experienced offense that season compared to last Saturday and probably more depth but not as much talent on D (did have Booger McFarland). Couch threw for 391 yards and 3 TDs, which was pretty rare in the SEC of that time.

I mean Couch had been the top QB recruit in the country prior to that...
Edited to add: he was supposed to go to UT and take over where Peyton left off.
This was the hot dog game, right?

Spurrier used to put 4 or 5 TD on the regular in the 90s. Just because leach put 1000 yards on lsu Saturday dont act like he is the only one to do that.

Couch did it all the time. Hale Mumme was one of the first air raid guys. And I was there, it was a very annoying game just like the rest of that season was. One of five losses by 6 points or fewer. Craig Yeast must have caught 437 passes inside 5 yards that game

He played against Peyton twice, so I don’t think he was ever supposed to replace him.

After a while teams learn how to defend the UK air raid. They started jamming our receivers at the line of scrimmage, keeping everything underneath and we also found it hard to score on the goal line. Air Raid also makes it tough to salt a game away with running the ball. Still it was effective for a couple of years considering UK's talent at the time. That was a surprising win at the time.

Twas indeed the hot dog game. Mumme mindfricked Dinardo right out of the gate! Haha

DiNardo mindfricked himself when he hired Lou Tepper who said himself his defense took 5 years for a player to master why y’all gotta dredge up these bad memories? That LSU team should have won the west with the team they brought back from 1997. As a matter of fact, they beat the west champs that year 42-6 that year by some fricked up cosmic joke. The way they figured out how to lose close games in 1998 was amazing

Was there as a grad student. Good times.

I remember that game I think, didn't UK win on a FG?

They did. LSU came back from 14 down in the 4th to tie the game and UK kicked a FG as time expired to win

I seem to also recall that the FG should have been blocked, very low kick that somehow got past the LOS.

Iirc my uncle and me had left the game, LSU came back and tied it even though we were an old-school I-Formation offense, then we watched UK kick the game winner on TV. That's the thing about air raid teams, you can never rule out blowing a huge lead like Wazzu did last year

I was there as a student. All of us knew there was too much time on the clock. That season was when humility was permanently ingrained in me as a fan. I watched so many idiots lose their minds at and after games, and it wasn't a good look.

Yeah I think half of the TRant would off themselves if they experienced anything remotely like 1998: start out 3-0 and #6 nationally and then lose 7 games, 6 of them in the most heartbreaking fashion possible
