Back before politics in football
Back when it was only amateur athletes playing a game
Back when a solid form tackle hit was appreciated and cheered, not flagged.
Back when Georgia was relevant

Been a long time. Miss these good ol days

The 80s were probably the worst time for under the table offers.

There was plenty of politics back then too. The trick then was to win the popularity polls with both the media and the coaches. The bowl matchups were often strange, with top 5 teams rarely having to play against each other, making it hard to determine who was really the #1 team.

No it wasn’t, unless you consider golf, swimming and men’s gymnastics scholarships going to football players.
My HS QB signed with Coach Bryant in 78. One of FIFTEEN QB’s they signed. He wound up a two time All American at SS, but your school skirted the rules without actually breaking them more than any other. Much like today.
The SWC was the Mecca or under the table deals, but not everyone went to that extreme.

Mainly due to conferet tie ins and bowl committees always trying to get an early commit from big name teams before the season was complete...it's what happened in the '81 Sugar Bowl.
