Is the longest stretch the SEC was without a national title in football. As a XII fan, I’m jealous. Anyhoo... the SEC had some great teams that were national championship worthy or should have been national champions but got screwed. Which team was the best?

1981 Georgia (10-2, 6-0)

1982 Georgia (11-1, 6-0) played Penn State for the national title

1983 Auburn (11-1, 6-0) should have been dual poll national champion

1984 Florida (9-1-1, 5-0-1) should have won at least a share of the national title

1985 Sugar Vols (9-1-2, 5-1) if not for the two ties, would have been national champions

1985 Florida (9-1-1, 5-1) had a shot at the AP title late in the season before loss to UGA

1987 LSU (10-1-1, 5-1)

1988 Auburn (10-2, 5-1)

1989 Tennessee (11-1, 6-1)

1989 Alabama actually got the Sugar Bowl invite and played Miami. The ‘canes won the national title.

It was no different than how Alabama got treated by pollsters in '77 so I don't have any sympathy for Auburn fans. Bottom line, 1983 Nebraska was being hyped up as the best and most dominant team in college football history. #5 Miami wasn't given a prayer's chance and yet emerged victorious in what was one of the best and most exciting games in college football history. Auburn played a snoozer of a game that same night, defeating Michigan in the Sugar Bowl by the score of 9-7, and failing to score a TD all night long.

Auburn might have had a legitimate shot at winning a share of the national title if they had looked more impressive in their bowl game.

Les Miles was watching and probably thought, "I bet I could win an NC like that."

1983 was a snow job by the press. #1 and #2 lose and #3 beats #8. Auburn played 9 bowl teams that year. Miami jumped from 5th to win. And only played 3 bowl teams that year and lost to Florida 28-3. Auburn beat Florida 28-21. What a snow job, 2004 as welll with Chokelahoma getting the nod over Auburn for the BCS.

The early 3-13 loss to Clemson made it tough for the 1981 team. A win over Pitt wouldn't have moved Georgia over Clemson in the final AP.
The 1982 season was different. Georgia was No. 1 going into the Sugar Bowl but that damned Todd Blackledge threw that last TD to put the game out of reach.

You can’t blame Oklahoma for what happened in 2004. USC and OU were #1 and #2 the entire regular season and didn’t lose.

SOS isn't even close though, plus we beat the shite out of Miami 28-3 and Auburn beat us.
