Imagine if it existed then? Oh what a perfect year it would have been for it. Imagine if the BCS was around then having to select the two best out of a loaded program lineup.

Oklahoma would be ineligible as they were on a two year postseason ban for probation in 1973 and 1974. But they were the AP champions in 1974 so for the sake of this thread, they are included.

Final Regular Season AP Top 8:

1. Alabama 11-0-0
2. Oklahoma 10-0-1
3. Notre Dame 11-0-0
4. Ohio State 9-0-1
5. Michigan 10-0-1
6. Penn State 11-0-0
7. Southern Cal 9-1-1
8. Texas 8-2-0

There would be some great matchups.

Reminds me of 2018 when only 3 teams were deserving but OU got in anyway just to embarrass themselves.

3 Wishbone teams in an 8 team tournament, in the 1970's.
I snicker a little bit thinking about the archaic schema the other 5 ran. They probably looked like some of the shite Les Miles was running.

Why wasn’t Penn State higher that year? I don’t know the context of that season outside Notre Dame and Alabama.

Partially because they started the season ranked below a number of the top teams and they didn't lose.
But mostly because it wasn't a real impressive schedule. Only played one ranked team all year, and then #12 LSU in the bowl:

Problems in scheduling is one of the issues that led Paterno to give up indy status.

The weird thing about 73

Is that it falls between 74 and 72. Hmmmmmm

I’ll take a CFP berth to potentially get embarrassed any day. You’re one of the FOUR with a chance. Yeah it sucks to be 0-4 but that’s life. OU contends and that is what keeps the brand as good as it is. No, OU is not SEC Elite. If only the defense was better consistently, then maybe that 0-4 would be 2-2.

On to the next one!

If ignorance is bliss you must be a very happy person.

FYI the Coaches poll still choose their champion before the bowl games, as both did at one time. So Alabama was the Coaches champ and ND was the sports writers champ. Both legit.

Why is this better than any other potential 8 team playoff year?

6 unbeaten teams at the end of the regular season. Never been done any other time that I know of.

The possibility of ties allowed for that. There were 5 unbeaten teams at the end of the 2009 regular season, which is probably an even more unlikely scenario in context.

Because the top 8 teams combine for more than 3 loses. This year, pre playoff, the top 8 teams had 9 combined loses
